Here’s a short video from my Instagram showing Tessie and her human doing some heel work. It’s not perfect yet and that’s ok. Not every dog needs to know heel. But it can help establish a better loose leash walk. Tessie is on her way to being a Therapy Dog. Here she is at about 5 months old and has had 8 lessons so far.

I am a force free trainer. Always have been. Always will be. I know better so I do better. I will not debate this with people. Here’s an article that sums up why.

The dog training world is quite divided in some respects, and never more so than right now. The constant debate, or hatred of each other seems to be increasing. I don’t think the divide, between av…

Another great Intermediate class in the books last night. Look at all these young dogs relaxing next to each other. When my students start class they think it will be impossible. But, if we set clear expectations for our dogs anything is possible.

Deter Chewing Through Process of Elimination: I used to execute this method on Lucky Dog all the time. Puppies are known to put anything in their mouths. It’s the nature of the beast when they’re in the toddler phase. There are multiple ways I like to teach a dog to not chew household items. This is often one of my favorites as it’s got a high percentage success rate. As you can see here we have a floor covered in dog toys mixed with typical household objects. The game is simple: Let the dog explore and go up to every object and see what they do. The objects they cannot chew I simply say No which typically deters them and guides them to the next object. If the next object is something they’re allowed to chew I simply praise and let them continue chewing it. The game continues like this throughout the session. In the end, the animal learns through a combination of shape, scent, taste and touch which objects are acceptable and which are not. The next day the game continues with a whole new board of items. A dog’s brain works just like a human’s in which trial and error teaches them what’s right and wrong. This 5 month old Aussie just got an important life lesson in chewing today. With a enough repetition her mind will naturally start creating a memory bank of the items for future reference. From there she’ll understand daddy’s shoes aren’t a chew toy 😝
