A closer look inside the operating room!
Dr. John Janicek and our surgical team are hard at work performing an OCD fragment removal from a horse’s hock.
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a developmental orthopedic condition that can cause cartilage abnormalities and loose fragments within a joint, potentially leading to inflammation, swelling, and lameness.
Through arthroscopic surgery, our team can remove these fragments using minimally invasive techniques, helping improve joint health and supporting a horse’s long-term comfort and performance.
A behind-the-scenes look at the precision and teamwork that goes into equine surgery at Salado Equine Medical Center!

Did you know acupuncture can be a valuable addition to your horse’s care? 🐴

Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment option that may help with pain management, muscle relaxation, and overall comfort.

At Salado Equine Medical Center, we’re proud to have Dr. Ashbrook, a veterinarian certified in acupuncture, offering this specialized service to our equine patients!

We also frequently utilize acupuncture in horses experiencing anhidrosis (the inability to sweat normally), a condition that can be especially challenging in the Texas heat.

Meet Dr. Jamie Ashbrook
Horses and animals have been a part of Dr. Ashbrook’s life from the start. Growing up on her family farm in South Carolina surrounded by a variety of animals, she developed a love for horses through riding English sport horses and competing in the jumper world.
Dr. Ashbrook earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She then completed a one-year internship at Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals-Salado before continuing her career in Tryon, North Carolina, as an associate veterinarian with Freer Equine Mobile Veterinary Services.
In 2018, Dr. Ashbrook returned to Salado, where she joined what is now Salado Equine Medical Center. Since then, she has played an important role in building and growing our ambulatory presence, providing care to countless horses and their owners throughout Central Texas. For nearly a decade, she has built lasting relationships within the communities we serve while helping bring SEMC’s standard of care directly to the horses who need it.
Outside of the clinic, Jamie enjoys running, hiking, reading, and riding her horse, Ricochet.

Exceptional equine care. Advanced expertise. This is Salado EMC.
