Your dog may listen perfectly at home, but what happens when the environment changes?

Real training means your dog understands what you’re asking anywhere, not just where they learned it. New locations introduce unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells, people, and distractions, giving you the opportunity to strengthen communication and build confidence.

DO:
✅ Start somewhere new with manageable distractions
✅ Practice commands your dog already understands
✅ Keep sessions short and positive
✅ Reward calmness, focus, and engagement
✅ Gradually increase the difficulty

DON’T:
❌ Expect perfect performance immediately
❌ Introduce too many distractions at once
❌ Rush into advanced exercises
❌ Confuse distraction with disobedience

TEAM DOG TRAINING POST 25: FREEDOM IS EARNED

Giving a dog complete freedom before trust has been established can create serious problems.

Too much freedom too soon often leads to:

• Destructive chewing
• Potty accidents
• Ignoring commands
• Counter surfing and stealing food
• Running through doors or escaping
• Practicing unwanted behaviors when no one is watching

Every time a dog repeats a bad behavior, that behavior becomes stronger.

Freedom should be earned through structure, consistency, and good decisions. Start with supervised time, leash guidance, crate training, place work, boundaries, and reliable commands. As your dog proves they can make better choices, gradually give them more access to the house, yard, and everyday activities.

Freedom is not something we simply give our dogs. It is something we teach them how to handle.

TEAM DOG TRAINING CHALLENGE – POST #23: Socialization Is NOT Interaction

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is thinking socialization means letting their dog meet everyone.

It doesn’t.

Socialization is teaching your dog to remain calm, neutral, and confident around the world—not expecting to interact with it.

DO:
✅ Reward calm behavior around people, dogs, and distractions.
✅ Teach your dog to focus on you.
✅ Expose them to new sights, sounds, and environments.
✅ Advocate for your dog and politely decline unwanted greetings.

DON’T:
❌ Let strangers pet your dog just because they ask.
❌ Allow leash-to-leash greetings with every dog.
❌ Reward pulling, barking, or excitement.
❌ Confuse excitement with confidence.

A truly socialized dog can walk through a crowd, pass another dog, or sit quietly at a café without feeling the need to engage. That’s confidence. That’s training.
