Did you know Fall is the most interesting season for your dog’s eyes (and nose)?

Dogs see colors differently than we do. While humans have three types of color-detecting cones, dogs have two. This means dogs see the world primarily in shades of blue and yellow. That makes fall an especially interesting time to explore🍁

Not to mention:
🐾 Cooler temperatures make walks more comfortable
🐾 Fallen leaves bring exciting new textures and scents to investigate
🐾 Outdoor walks support physical exercise and are mentally stimulating

So today, take the longer route. Let them stop and sniff the leaves. Give them time to explore instead of rushing them along.

🍂🐾 Hello, Fall! 🐾🍂

The first official day of fall is here! Cooler temps mean longer walks, more outdoor adventures, and the perfect weather to brush up on your pup’s training. 🎃🍁

Fall is a great time to work on leash manners, recall, focus, impulse control, and good manners around all those exciting new smells and distractions. A tired dog is great—but a dog who knows how to listen while enjoying the outdoors is even better! 🐶

So grab your leash, enjoy that crisp fall air, and make training part of the adventure! 🍂🐕

TLC Dog Training proudly serves families throughout Westplex:

Trainer Tip Tuesday 💙🩵

Let’s talk about training goals!

When I ask dog owners what their training goals are, I’m always looking for things you want your dog to DO—not just things you DON'T want them to do. There's a reason..

❌ Focusing on the negative: "I don't want my dog to pull me down the street."
✅ Reframing for success: "I want my dog to walk beside me on a loose leash."

It might sound like a simple shift in words, but it fundamentally changes your mindset and how your dog learns!

🧠 The Simple Science Behind the Shift

👉Clear Directions: There are a hundred ways for a dog to "not walk nicely" (barking, zigzagging, pulling). But there’s usually only one behavior that earns a reward! Giving your dog a positive goal gives them a clear roadmap to win.

👉Incompatible Behaviors: In behavioral science, setting a goal often relies on teaching a behavior that makes the unwanted behavior physically impossible. Simply put: a dog cannot jump on guests if their butt is glued to the floor in a sit, and they cannot pull ahead if they are matching your leg on a heel.
👉Less Stress, Faster Success: Studies consistently show that when we focus on rewarding desired goals rather than correcting mistakes, dogs learn faster and everyone stays way less frustrated.

🐾 Progress Over Perfection

Setting clear goals isn't about having a "perfect" dog 24/7—it’s about celebrating the small wins along the way! As a trainer, my main goal isn't just teaching commands; it's helping you build a fantastic relationship with your pup so you can actually get out there and enjoy life together.

When you frame your goals positively, you stop constantly managing mistakes and start proactively building habits you love living with.
