This weekend we had a really scary experience with Halo that I wanted to share to raise awareness.
We were at a hotel unloading our car. Halo was happily standing in her car seat, wagging her tail, when a group of people nearby started smoking ma*****na. Within minutes, the smell in the car was very strong.
Suddenly, her head started bobbing, her legs gave out, and she collapsed into her seat. Her heart was racing, she was limp in my arms, and she couldnโt even stand. It was terrifying.
We immediately rolled down all the windows, got her fresh air, and drove toward an emergency vet. On the way, she slowly started responding, but when we arrived, she was still stumbling around like she was drunk. After a couple of hours, she thankfully returned to normal. She is still behaving completely normal today, thank goodness.
Halo had all of the symptom except drooling and vomiting. Ma*****na is an antienemtic so I would not have expected vomiting.
The vet confirmed what we suspected: she experienced THC toxicity from secondhand ma*****na smoke.
Takeaway for pet parents:
Dogs can be very sensitive to THC โ even from smoke in the air.
Symptoms can include: loss of coordination, tremors, dilated pupils, fast heartbeat, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or appearing โout of it.โ
If this happens to your dog, get them into fresh air and seek vet care right away.
I am so grateful sheโs okay now, but it was a reminder of how quickly something like this can happen. Sharing this so others know what to look out for โ and how serious it can be.
Tonya Wilhelm I would love to hear any insights, information you have on this.
Our pets canโt tell us whatโs wrong โ so we have to be their voice.
