(Gratiot Animals In Need) promotes spay and neuter education and offers financial assistance and access to low or no cost spay and neuter services for pets in Gratiot County, Michigan. To promote pet retention and reduce the number of pets surrendered to the local shelter, G.A.I.N. will assist pet owners with:

Hello G.A.I.N. followers! We have kittens at Feeders! We have the Trinkets Litter (inspired by the Little Mermaid) and one kitten from the Lion King Litter!

Kiara is a beautiful lighter tabby girl. She is 5 months old. Kiara is the most well behaved of her litter. She is named after a princess after all! She enjoy cuddles and loves squeezy treats! She is sweet and gentle, but also outgoing! Kiara has been around dogs and done well.

The Trinkets Litter are all 4 months old!

Di**le is a handsome pale orange and white guy. He is a BIG but sensitive kitten. He is almost double his sisters size and just keeps growing! He can be a bit withdrawn at first, but once he is comfortable with new places and people he loves to play, pure, pounce, and cuddle!

Gadget is an orange and white guy like his brother but he's much deeper orange! He starts out a little shy, but give him time and he will play, play, and play! He's not so found of being picked up, but he is getting much more comfortable with it.

Widget is a stunning orange and white girl. She is super spunky once she feels comfortable with her surroundings. She takes time to evaluate her situation, and then she comes crashing in to start the party! She loves to play and tackle her siblings, but she also loves to be babied!

Gizmo is also a pretty deep orange and white like her sister and brother. She and Widget are virtually twins! Gizmo is a very sweet and playful girl. She loves to be loved up! She can be a bit shy like her siblings but given a little while to figure things out she's ready to get those b***y scratches!

All of these kittens are spayed/neutered, age appropriately vaccinated, microchipped, and parasite treated.

Hello G.A.I.N. followers! We have two juveniles at Feeders right now we would love to introduce. They were surrendered back to us after their previous adoption did not work out. So due to no fault of their own they're looking for a Fur-Ever home once more! We've attached their previous pictures as well as current. Just because Grady has the cutest smile!

Nikko and Grady are brothers and fast friends. They're 5.5 months old and up to date on vaccines, as well as neutered, parasite treated, and microchipped. We would love for them to find a home together, but they are available for adoption separately.

Nikko is as fun as he is handsome. He loves to play and is a very active kitty! He also loves to cuddle. The way he looks up at you while his motor is running makes it hard not to fall in love. Nikko loves life and wants to live it to the fullest. He cannot resist a sweeping broom. Nikko is a bit of a talker! He often likes to voice his opinions. Nikko will be such a loving and fun companion in his new forever home. He will need plenty of playtime, lots of toys and a cat tree to keep him busy. But time spent with his family will be his number one priority. Nikko is not a big fan of dogs. Therefore, a dog free home is preferred.

Grady is a handsome and very active guy with personality plus. He is happy being a part of anything you are doing. He wants to be involved. He wants to sniff it, touch it, play with it, or whatever else he can think of. Grady is not super fond of dogs, but one already good with cats might be ok. No dogs would be even better. Grady is also a goofy guy. He will keep you laughing with all of his antics. He also is sweet and loves to cuddle! He will easily share his loud purr with you while sitting in your lap. Grady will be a wonderful forever kitty for anyone looking for a loving, cuddly, friendly, and playful companion.

Hello G.A.I.N. followers! We have an update on our spay/neuter clinic numbers for the year so far.

We have fixed a total of 699 cats since our first clinic on March 9th. Of those cats and kittens that were sterilized there were 360 males and 339 females.

The math is literally astronomical. 339 females having just three kittens each would produce 1,017 MORE cats! And that's just the first litter they would've had this year!

Overpopulation is the biggest problem that cats face when living outdoors or in unmanaged colonies. It leads to scarcity of food, territory, shelter, and also limits space for potential adoption into pet homes. Trapping and fixing these cats prevents more from ending up in the cycle of breeding and fighting to survive. TNR also prevents the spread of disease through vaccines and limiting breeding contact and aggression/fighting over mates.

Even better is that every spay and neuter makes a world of difference for the cat that is fixed! Sterilized and vaccinated cats are safer from disease, issues with pregnancy, birth, and raising kittens, territory and mating disputes, and overall body condition and health. Not only does it help the cat that is fixed, but it helps the cat community in the area AND human community as a whole!

We have an amazing program where you can sponsor a community cat! What this means is you will make a one time donation of $25 and a cat will be trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, parasite treated, and then recovered and returned to it's colony.

Hello G.A.I.N. followers! We are back for the final part of our mini-series on common illness and injuries we've been seeing this year.

This is also an update on a few of our Cyclopes kittens!

This year we have been seeing tons of terrible eye infections in young kittens and cats. We have had several kittens whose eyes we were able to save, which is always the goal! But, we have also had several kittens whose eyes were already too far gone (or in some cases completely gone) to save.

It is always a sad day for us to discover this, but also a happy day when they get their eyes out! They feel so much better after their surgeries and then they can go on to find Fur-Ever homes.

The top three causes of eye infections in kittens are the herpes virus, bacterial infections, and physical trauma.

A lot of young kittens that come to us have some form of the herpes virus. Most of them are able to systemically clear it, but occasionally a kitten will fight it harder than others and can have permanent issues from it.

Bacterial infections have been the most common thing we have seen this year. These infections are most commonly due to dirty queening and weaning environments, mother's with prior infections, and poor overall conditions in the surrounding environment.

The final issue is physical trauma, this can happen from something as simple as playing and getting a siblings claw to an eye.

Two of the five Cyclops babies have had their eyes removed, and will shortly be looking for a Fur-Ever home! Polyphemus and Steropes are pictured below! These pictures are their intake pictures and their most current pictures! Isn't it amazing what a few months of food, good care, and love can do for an animal in need!

Hello G.A.I.N. followers! We are back with part two of our common injury and illness series.

Today we're going to talk about Botfly's.

If you don't know what a Bot or Botfly is, you're lucky. It's a nasty little fuzzy bee look-a-like fly that lays eggs near rodent and rabbit dens. When a species of animal like a cat rubs against the eggs, the larvae transfers to the animal's skin or fur. From there, it borrows into the the skin and grows. As it does this, it migrates around the tissues of the living animal , ingesting them and causing trauma and damage.

Bots can get very large and can cause several severe issues. From tissue damage, to mild infection and trauma, to sepsis and death. While prescription medicine for parasites can kill a live bot, it cannot prevent one from transferring to an animal and burrowing into the skin.

This leads to the story about Legend Riorson. Legend Riorson is a handsome kitten that showed up Weatherby's Plumbing & Heating a few days ago. The wonderful people there noticed that while he was as sweet as pie he seemed to be missing a piece, specifically of his neck, which sounds dramatic until you see it.

The employees at Weatherby's realized he needed immediate care and veterinary help. They contacted G.A.I.N. and asked if we could help him out. Thank you so much to the wonderful people at Weatherby's who kept this little guy safe until we could get him!

Once again, an amazing vet we work with got another cat (Legend) in, to make sure we could get him on the healing path! The vet confirmed our concerns that the hole in his little neck was a burst botfly hole.

Now Legend Riorson is on oral antibiotics, creams, and sprays to keep his neck not so dry and itchy. We are not out of the woods with the chance of sepsis, but so far he seems to be doing extremely well.

Botfly's are nasty little critters and can do serious damage quickly. Especially to small kittens and other animals. The best preventative for bot flies is having an indoor, flea treated, and well-monitored pet. If you notice any signs of swelling, heat, redness, or hair loss, especially around the head or neck area of the pet, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Hello G.A.I.N. followers as we mentioned late last week it was a crazy week for us. We have decided we are going to do a multi-part series on a few common injuries and illnesses we have been seeing lately to help inform the public on things to monitor for. We are going share some pictures and basic information about these injuries/illnesses.

To start, we are going to talk about cats and broken legs. Let's be honest here, cats may have "9 lives" and "cat like reflexes" but they do find some interesting ways to get themselves hurt.

On that note, we would like to introduce Lolatai. She and her four siblings were born in a home with one of our fosters on April 16th, 2026. This makes them roughly 4 months old now. Lolatai and her siblings didn't know hardship like their Mama did. They knew warmth, safety, food, medical care, and love from the get go.

But here's the thing, kittens will be kittens. Lolatai was scheduled to be picked up on Friday to go to Feeder's for adoption. So of course on Thursday night who started limping? Lolatai. We got her into one of our outstanding veterinarians and got an exam and X-rays.

Result's? A broken tibia, not a broken fibula and tibia, no just a broken tibia. So somehow she fractured one of the two bones in her lower back leg. This is actually outstanding news because the unbroken bone can act as a stabilizer for the broken one. The other good news is she is otherwise young, happy, and healthy. And by happy and healthy we mean that the vet said she wasn't sure that she knew her leg was broken! She should heal very well and have minor complications. (Minus one of her nine lives!)

Fractured bones in kittens and cats are moderately common for a few reasons. One being that they are cats and will do gymnastics they aren't sure they can pull off, like Lolatai. Another reason would be car strike injuries, as we believe our kitten Tria from earlier this week had. A third common way for injury is to be stepped on by a human or other larger animal.

Kittens have young, bendy, and growing bones. They commonly get "greenstick" or incomplete fractures. Luckily, due to age and growth rate kittens with breaks heal well. Adults most commonly break bones due to an accidental trauma or aging bones.

If your cat is limping, has heat or swelling in the limb, or just isn't acting quite right after a fall or other incident, it is always advised to seek out a veterinarian's services. Cats can hide pain and injuries very well.
