Lake and Local Business Spotlight: FuzzyButz Pet Bakery

Meet Alex, the owner of FuzzyButz in downtown St. Joseph.

Alex and his parents, Victoria and Al, purchased the longtime pet boutique in 2025 after already owning the commercial space. When FuzzyButz came up for sale, they saw an opportunity to take on a business that had already become a familiar part of downtown.

The funny part? Alex had never worked in retail or the pet industry before.

His background is actually in e-commerce and animation art. He started collecting Disney pens when he was younger, which eventually grew into a passion for animation artwork and an online business buying and selling it. He still runs that business today, just on a smaller scale while he focuses on FuzzyButz.

Taking over a pet store meant learning a whole new industry, but Alex says the transition has gone well.

One of the things that makes FuzzyButz especially unique is the bakery inside the shop. The bakery was started by the previous owners, and Alex and his family decided to keep it going. Today, his parents oversee the bakery, where they make decorated treats, bulk biscuits and specialty goodies for pets.

And yes, they have a “Yappy Meal.” 🐶

Outside of the store, Alex has also become involved in the community. He serves as treasurer for St. Joseph Today and sits on the Downtown Development Authority.

For Alex, being involved in downtown is about more than his own business.

“If other businesses are doing well, it will draw more people to the area,” he said. “It helps the downtown, helps the city, the businesses.”

That sense of community seems to be a big part of Alex’s vision for FuzzyButz. He believes the businesses downtown are all part of the same bigger picture, and when one succeeds, it helps bring people through the doors of all of them.

It’s also fitting that Alex ended up in St. Joseph. Although he grew up in Illinois, his grandfather brought the family here for summer vacations when he was young because he loved fishing in the area. Now, Alex lives within walking distance of the business he calls his own.

From animation art to pet treats, Alex’s path to FuzzyButz may have been unexpected, but he’s found a pretty natural place for himself in the community.
