🐴 Horse Fun Fact: What Are Chestnuts?

Chestnuts are the small, rough patches found on the inside of a horse’s legs. They are located above the knees on the front legs and below the hocks on the hind legs.

Scientists believe chestnuts may be evolutionary remnants of the foot pads found on horses’ ancient ancestors! Over millions of years, horses evolved from small, multi-toed animals into the single-hoofed horses we know today.

Chestnuts continually grow and naturally peel or flake away. Their shapes and patterns vary from horse to horse—almost like little equine fingerprints! 🔍

Have you ever noticed the chestnuts on your favorite horse?
