There are several key elements to owning a healthy happy pet. One element that is frequently overlooked is grooming. Grooming isn’t a luxury for pets, it’s a necessity and it does not need to break the bank. Grooming makes for not only a clean smelling companion, it helps to keep your family member comfortable and it will also help you to detect early health issues with your pets such as skin infections, ear infections, and even possibly issues with their teeth.
Is grooming important to your pet’s health and comfort? Take a moment and imagine this, your hair is in a ponytail that is just a little too tight, or you have gotten something in your hair and it is all stuck together, think about how uncomfortable that would be for you. This is what a mat can do to your dog, it is always pulling the skin creating pain. Just think about that happening all over your body all the time, that is how uncomfortable an ungroomed coat can be for your pet. A basic standard of care should prevent your dog from ever knowing what a mat feels like, simply brushing and combing your pet on a regular basis will ensure this does not happen
With regular brushing and combing you may be able to identify any lumps or bumps that are questionable. If this is the case we would advise that you speak to your veterinarian about these lumps as many times early detection can be the key to saving your pet from cancer.
For those of us with short haired dogs, we never have to worry about matts. Keeping our dogs coats and skin happy and healthy can be pretty easy. Just running your hands over your dogs daily and then doing a weekly brushing will make a big difference in keeping them healthy.
How important is nail trimming? Imagine that feeling of what your toes feel like when you let your own toenails go too long. The pressure your shoes put on your feet, the rubbing on your socks. In general it is a very uncomfortable feeling. This is the same for a dog . When their toenails are left too long it causes a great deal of pain for the dogs to be able to walk. It can also cause their feet to be malformed if left too long. Oftentimes nails can grow and curl and will actually grow into the pad of their feet. This can lead to infections in their pads, which we have actually seen go into the bone in their feet. Not only are these infections very painful for your pet, but they are also very costly for you in treatment with your veterinarian. A simple solution is just to provide proper nail trimming to your pet at least every 6-8 weeks. Adequate exercise like walking on concrete can also help to keep nails filed down.
