What is a Samurai Betta?

Samurai bettas trace back to the creation of Red Dragons, which began with a cross between Betta Mahachaiensis and a Red Copper Plakat, with copper likely entering earlier through an Imbellis relative. From crossing and backcrossing to a Super Red Plakat, breeders produced Red Dragon V1, which had weaker color and finnage than modern dragons. Later, Red Dragon V2 appeared after improvements to fins and coloration, though the exact methods were never clearly documented. Around this time, Victoria Stark of BettySplendens noted that Mahachaiensis-Domestic crosses often produced weak spawns, leading her to integrate her line with her masked Imbellis–Splendens line, an important context for early dragon development. Black Dragons were later created by crossing Red Dragons with Super Blacks, and Black Samurai emerged either by repeated Black Dragon pairings or by crossing Black Dragons with Super Blacks. Aging Samurai often show expanding metallic scaling, diamond eye, and fins may turn red.

What is the coolest alien betta?

What do you get when you mix wild bettas, domestic bettas, and a lot of selective breeding? You get Akasha, aka Ack Ack!, a fish who genuinely looks like she came from outer space. She’s clearly some sort of alien betta, and while it’s hard to definitively tell if she's an Avatar Alien or a Samurai Alien (or even if those lines are different, genetically), her scattered metallic “star” pattern matches the look of Avatar Aliens rather than the back-heavy metallics seen in Samurai Aliens. Avatar bettas, also called Blue Black Stars, are produced by combining Blue Black Light lines from Blue Green Peacocks with the marble gene via Black Candy Kois. Aliens themselves are loosely defined, being wild-dominant hybrids generally thought to be made from species like mahachaiensis, smaragdina, and others, with domestic blood added for color and full masks, though the exact mix is largely unknown. When those two lines combine, you can end up with something beautiful, like Ack Ack!
