This powerful trait makes them natureโ€™s first line of defense against potential disease outbreaks. By eating carcasses and organic waste, vultures likely prevent the spread of deadly diseases that could devastate wildlife, livestock, and even people!

๐Ÿต Cotton-top tamarins are currently only found in the northwestern forests of Colombia! They evolved to thrive in that specific tropical forest ecosystem and cannot cross the Atrato and Magdalena rivers to go beyond this area. They are strictly ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ, meaning they spend almost all their time high up in the canopies of forests.

Today we recognize the incredible roles primates play in keeping their ecosystems healthy and their close relationship to humans, as well as raise awareness about the threats they face, such as habitat loss and population decline! Zoos are not just places for entertainment, they are crucial places for saving endangered species, conducting scientific research, and educating communities about the natural world!

Here at the Saginaw Children's Zoo we strive to be safe haven for the animals in our care! As part of our AZA accreditation, we participate in Species Survival Plansยฉ (SSP) and Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) programs to save many endangered species from extinction, including African penguins, Egyptian tortoises, cotton-top tamarins, Mexican wolves, and masked bobwhites โ€” all animals that have a home that feels like their natural habitat at the Saginaw Childrenโ€™s Zoo.
