Alright y’all... this is an egret rookery. Photos can’t fully capture just how intense this is, so we’ve also posted a video in the comments.

This is in the 300 block of Western Ave. in Saginaw. There are more than 200 cattle egrets nesting here, with eggs and babies in the nests. It’s incredibly loud, and yes... that white stuff covering everything is bird droppings.

This is why it’s so important to use deterrents before egrets decide to nest. Cattle egrets are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Once nesting begins and eggs are present, the birds cannot be disturbed or relocated.

Before that point, however, property owners can take steps to discourage egrets from choosing their trees. Once eggs are present, the only actions Saginaw Animal Services can take are checking on sick or injured birds and removing deceased birds.

The good news is this can often be prevented before nesting season begins. Egret nesting season typically runs from February through October.

For more information on prevention and deterrence, check out the helpful Texas Parks and Wildlife guide in the comments.
