It's Exercise Month at CAM! To keep your dog moving safely without triggering a painful flare-up, stick to our four golden rules of exercise:

1️⃣ Pace over Race: Slow down and let them enjoy a 'Sniffari'.
2️⃣ Ditch the Ball: Say no to high-impact twists and sudden braking.
3️⃣ Watch the Terrain: Stick to flat, even, and grippy surfaces.
4️⃣ Gear Up Safely: Protect their body with the right equipment.

The Ultimate Tool: A collar puts dangerous pressure on a sore neck and spine. A high-quality, well-fitted harness distributes weight safely, doesn't restrict their shoulders, and gives you gentle control to help them if they stumble.

🛍️ Protect their joints on every walk. Visit the CAM Shop to view CAM approved walking equipment:

Only 29% of Black Americans report owning a pet, compared to 70% of white respondents. A new study in Human-Animal Interactions (Ford, Dowling-Guyer, Mueller & McDonald, 2026) asks the question most HAI research has ignored: why, and what does that gap actually mean for the people living it?

Through in-depth interviews with 31 Black and African American adults, researchers identified five interconnected themes — including empathy for animals rooted in shared experiences of oppression, the healing power of pet companionship amid racism, intergenerational family narratives around animals, structural barriers to pet ownership, and pervasive racism within animal advocacy and welfare spaces.

One of the most striking findings: many participants described a deep kinship with stigmatized dog breeds — Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans — breeds they saw as targeted by the same fear, surveillance, and control directed at Black communities. Defending these dogs was described as an act of reclamation, not just compassion.

The takeaway for researchers and practitioners is direct: the human-animal bond is not universal or apolitical. Access to it is shaped by housing policy, breed bans, economic precarity, and the racial dynamics of animal welfare institutions themselves. Treating it otherwise isn't neutral — it erases the experiences of people who have been navigating all of this for generations.

Upcoming Dog Behavior and Welfare Workshops!

Two evidence-based workshops designed to help you better understand and support your dog.

Canine Cognition explores how dogs think, learn, process, problem-solve, and gather information about the world around them. We’ll cover what canine cognition is, what the science says, and how to apply it. Through understanding how your dog processes information and learns, it empowers us to not only improve their general welfare but can support their; ability to learn how to learn, develop confidence, and improve optimism. This workshop is a great fit for anyone who wants a deeper, more meaningful look at how dogs learn and adapt.

Introduction to Canine Massage features a live demo and great educational information with Laura Sheldon, CSAMT, who has over twenty years of experience in the veterinary field. This workshop focuses on the evidence behind canine massage, the ways it can provide behavioral support through calming massage or pain relief, along with it's role in an interdisciplinary approach to dog behavior. We’ll also introduce our new massage support services and help you understand which dogs may benefit most. This service is being added specifically to help reduce tension, anxiety, and reactivity, supporting positive behavior change, and give dogs more help becoming physically able to relax.

Please help!
Spread the word that putting hands in food bowls and pulling food away from dogs INCREASES aggressive behavior.
Dropping food in the bowl as you walk by DECREASES aggressive behavior. Now we even have research to support this. Please help get the word out.
