The Pet Issue is Out!

And yes, we may have gone a little overboard on the cute.

Meet Shadow, our ridiculously photogenic new cover model and one of the Grand Prize winners of this year’s Outword Pet Photo Contest. Inside, Shadow is joined by Joan, Rocki, Sadie, Dahlia, Mica, Sofi, Buddy Love, George Harrison & Eric Clapton — yes, those are corgis — and enough furry faces to make getting any actual work done nearly impossible.

We’re showing off our contest winners, runners-up and some of our favorite entries, plus a whole page of wonderful pet portraits from our longtime friend Janet at Lucky Buddy Pet Care.

But we didn’t completely go to the dogs (and a few cats).

There’s also a look at how RedRover is helping domestic violence survivors stay together with their pets, some fall fun with the Sacramento SPCA, an interesting way to turn your backyard into a private dog park with Sniffspot, and ideas for hitting the California road with Fido.

And because it’s still Outword, we managed to squeeze in LGBTQ+ news, voting, Disney On Ice, theater, movies, music, a little “Heated Rivalry” and plenty more.

When a survivor is escaping domestic violence, every second counts. 💜 RedRover.org/PurpleLeashProject

Nearly half of survivors delay leaving because they cannot bring their pets with them, yet just over 20% of domestic violence shelters currently have pet housing programs. Leaving an abusive situation is already overwhelming – and having to choose between personal safety and a beloved family pet adds an unimaginable barrier.

As Lindsey Shipley from Purina, our Purple Leash Project partner, shares, if we can remove even one of those barriers and help a survivor escape safely with their pet, that is a job worth doing.

For many survivors of domestic violence, leaving an abuser means facing an agonizing choice: stay in an unsafe home, opt for homelessness, or leave a beloved pet behind. In fact, 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that an abuser had threatened, injured, or killed family pets.

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, guest author Taylor Reed fromPeace at Home Family Shelter shares how building a pet sanctuary on shelter grounds — with support from a RedRover Safe Housing Grant, Purina, and Greater Good Charities — is removing this barrier and keeping families together.

Starting a pet housing program at a shelter can be simpler than most people think! 🐶🐱

A common myth is that shelter staff must take on daily pet care responsibilities. In reality, survivors continue caring for their own pets, providing a comforting routine, normalcy, and emotional support in a new environment. That is why RedRover and Purina provide coaching and grant resources to help shelters make this shift.

RedRover believes that pets are family, and it is our mission to preserve the human-animal bond and help animals in crisis. Being separated suddenly from any of your family members is a crisis, whether it be evacuating a natural disaster, escaping domestic abuse, or becoming detained.

In response to stories we are hearing about pets being left without care (and possibly in dangerous/life-threatening situations) due to the detainment and/or deportation of their pet parents, we are sharing these tips to help ensure that pets are cared for in their potential absence.
