How do we keep puppies safe during interactions with adult dogs?

Most adult dogs have a "forgiving hand" when it comes to puppies. Espically the males as they usually view them as small friends. Females are a little heavier on corrections. We see this in Gypsy our 7 year old dog as she's a seasoned puppy raiser at this point. If you are welcoming your new puppy into a space where you already have an existing dog in the home, here are some things you can do to set them up for success:

1. Rotate your adult dogs- By only having one adult dog out at a time during playtime you can control the situation more easily to ensure play is fair. If you see the puppy being overly jumpy or nippy then seperate if your adult dog shows signs of stress. If you feel like you're adult dog is overcorrecting then you can seperate them. If you are unsure of how to do this you can always reach out to a trainer for help.

2. Take breaks- Puppies don't need to interact with the adults 24/7. Puppies just like babies can get overwhelmed and cranky. This leads to stress for adult dogs as their previous level of corrections may not be as effective. By taking breaks we can allow for some forced emotional regulation and recharging.

3. Use an X-Pen- By using a xpen we allow for a barrier control. This allows the puppy to see the adult dogs while not necessarily being allowed to interact with them. In doing this we can teach our puppies to settle by observing the adult dogs' behavior.

Bringing home a new puppy can be a joyous event. It's our job to set them and our existing dogs up for the most successful outcome.🥰 Elementary Canines offers help with these events. We also help with puppy matching to connect you to breeders/rescues when looking for a new friend to add to your home. Reach out to us today, as we'd love to be a step in your new journey!!!

Chicken Little is a counter conditioning and exposure game I like to play with my dogs that have containment and isolation anxiety. This is a game that you play at the dogs pace and can vary based on the stress level of the individual dog.

Orion’s containment and isolation anxiety training session went well! We're hoping for more small wins like this!

🐶✨ Types of Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Not all separation anxiety looks the same! Here are the main types to help you understand what your pup might be experiencing:

1. True Separation Anxiety

Your dog panics because you, their primary attachment figure, are gone.
🧡 Symptoms: Vocalizing, destructive behavior, pacing, or house-soiling shortly after you leave.

2. Isolation Distress

Your dog doesn’t need you specifically — they just don’t want to be alone.
🐕 They’re fine with any trusted human, pet sitter, or another dog around.

3. Barrier Frustration

Your dog feels anxious when they’re confined or restricted (e.g., behind baby gates, in a crate) even if you’re home.
🚪 It’s about being separated, not necessarily alone.

4. Hyper-Attachment Anxiety

Some dogs form an intense attachment and get anxious when they can’t maintain constant physical closeness.
👣 These are the pups who follow you everywhere.

5. Departure Cue Anxiety

Your dog becomes stressed when they notice your pre-departure cues: picking up keys, putting on shoes, grabbing your bag.
🔔 They start anticipating being alone before it even happens.

💡 Remember

Each dog’s anxiety can look different — and many experience a mix of these types. The good news? With patience, training, and support, separation anxiety can improve. ❤️🐾

Where does my dog stay when it comes to Elementary Canines? Here at Elementary Canines we offer a home environment for your pet's stay to keep them as stress free as possible.

During the day the dogs spend time in our living room listening to classical music, watching TV, playing with various toys and enrichment. They go on adventures throughout the day to fun walking paths, sniffspots, and indoor dog friendly extracurriculars. If you have a dog that may not get along with other dogs we create a very accommodating rotation system to allow for ample one on one time🥰.

At night we offer a cozy boarding experience with an appropriately sized crate, dog room calming aromatherapy, and white noise to help aid in their staycation! When your puppy stays with us we also offer 1:1 maitence grooming for our dogs that may need it.

When we have to leave we crate all dogs but keep a close eye through a Wyze camera with special pet detection settings. We have an amazing sitter on backup if ever an emergency arises! We believe in an open door philosophy and are here to answer any questions you may have! Reach out to book your holiday stay plans before spots are full.

Dogs👏are👏not👏babies👏

Or are they?

Whenever I talk about my dogs, the things we do for them, the way we treat them, their dog sports and activities. I always get 1 of two responses.

1: 🤨 It's a dog why do you put so much time, money, and talk like its a child?

2:😍 Omg that's sooo amazing I love my dogs soo much too.

Now does response 1 mean they love their dogs less than response 2? No. What it means is that animals mean different things to different people.

Some people choose to not have children for financial, medical, or other reasons... but it doesnt mean they not want them... Some people may have jobs that are too demanding in their minds to warrant having children or maybe they have to travel for their jobs or work extremely long hours... Some people have complex disabilities that make parenting a child extreme hard. Do some do it anyways and rock it? Yes... but not everyone feels they can.

Some people may have lost a child and got a dog after to help them through it. Maybe that dog filled that space of the baby they never got to meet... To them those dogs are their children...

You never know why a person might be soooo attached to their dogs and view them as more than just a " pet". So remember that when you may view your family pet or dog as "your best friend" or the "coolest roomate"... Some people view them as their children and that's ok.

Try to take that into consideration when you work with clients who may be scared, nervous, ask a million questions, want to know the fine details, want to leave a piece of their clothing with them for their stay or their favorite toy. We as people that work within the dog industry should be mindful of these things when working with our clients. Its ok to slow down and sympathize with them. 🥰

We hope that here at Elementary Canines we have done that for you 🥰
