Due to no fault of his own Colby has begun searching for a family once again. His potential parents were wonderful, but had some unforeseen events which has caused them to wait at this time.

Colby is a black and cream piebald longhair male. Pecorino is a shaded cream longhair male. Those are our current looking puppies.

Pecorino is 8 weeks old and is our last baby 👀ing. He is visiting his Grandma for some socialising. He is 3 lbs and a little bigger than a water bottle for size perspective. 🥰🐶

Dewclaw injuries are not very common. In all of my years in veterinary care most foot injuries were actually to other digits other than dews. Most often dew injuries were due to improper maintenance of the nails or floppy dewclaws.

We do not remove front dewclaws on our dachshund puppies.

Reasons being:

‼️Joint Instability and Arthritis: Dewclaws help stabilize the carpal (wrist) joint when a dog pivots or runs. Removing them creates extra torque on the leg, which significantly increases the risk of early-onset arthritis and carpal injuries as the dog ages.

‼️Muscle Atrophy: The front dewclaws are connected to major muscles by several functional tendons. Removing the dewclaw severs these tendons, which can cause the associated muscles in the lower leg to waste away (atrophy) from disuse.

‼️Loss of Traction: Dewclaws make contact with the ground when a dog is running at high speeds, turning, or climbing steep banks. Without them, dogs can easily slip, especially on uneven, icy, or rocky terrain.
