Sweet Indigo is 👀 for his 🏠 💙

He is 5 weeks old, blue & cream, and will be ready to head home September 19th. He’s the cutest little stumpy boy with the sweetest personality and is going to make someone very happy.

A little dilute PSA: Blue is a dilute color, which means there is a possibility of Color Dilution Alopecia (CDA), causing coat thinning or hair loss. Not every dilute dog will develop it, but we always want our families to be informed and educated.

He is ready to find his people. 🤍

Let’s Talk About AI & Enhanced Photos in Dog Breeding 🐾

In today’s world of AI and advanced photo editing, it’s more important than ever to know what you’re actually looking at when researching a puppy or breeding program.

At ForeversEdge Doxies, the puppy or dog pictured is always the actual puppy or dog being represented. We do not use AI-generated dogs, AI replacements, or color editing designed to make a dog appear paler, darker, more contrasted, or otherwise different from how they look in person.

There’s a difference between correcting a photo for lighting, focus, or clarity and altering the appearance of the dog itself.

When looking at breeder photos, pay attention to things like:

🔎 Background colors: Do they look unnaturally bright, washed out, or overly saturated?

🔎 The dog’s coat: Does the color or pattern appear unusually vivid or dramatically different from other photos?

🔎 Details and texture: Do the dog’s features look overly smooth, “cartoony,” or almost too perfect?

🔎 Consistency: Does the puppy look the same across multiple photos, different angles, and different lighting?

If you’re ever unsure, ask the breeder for additional photos and videos. Ask to see the puppy standing, sitting, from different angles, and in normal lighting. The same applies to the parents.

‼️This is especially important when it comes to breeding prospects.‼️

Every dog has strengths and weaknesses. Coat color, pattern, structure, pigmentation, markings, and other physical characteristics all matter when evaluating a dog for a breeding program. Artificially altering those characteristics can hide things that a potential buyer or breeder deserves to see.

Using an AI-generated dog in a breeding announcement can be particularly misleading because it may present a dog that does not actually exist or does not accurately represent the parents being bred.

📸 Example pictured: This is Bindi with an enhancement applied to the original photograph. The enhancement sharpened her dapple and brindle markings and increased the saturation of her cream coloring. Even the orange harness has an obviously unnatural pigment after editing.

The purpose of sharing this isn’t to criticize anyone for taking a nice photograph. It’s to encourage transparency and informed puppy buyers.

In the age of AI, remember:

A beautiful picture isn’t necessarily an accurate picture.

Ask questions. Request videos. Look at multiple photos. And make sure you’re seeing the actual dog, not an enhanced version designed to sell you an image. I see a lot of viral photos of AI images and enhanced dogs posted by breeders, especially those of dilutes. As a breeder this concerns me as dilutes have the possibility of a condition called CDA and I fear breeders may be using generated photos to hide this condition from unsuspecting families.

Smooth-coated dachshunds consistently exhibited poorer spinal health than long- and wire-coated dachshunds across all study populations, suggesting that coat-related genes may influence spinal health and susceptibility to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).

A retrospective study evaluated 4,295 dachshunds from the United Kingdom, Norway, and Denmark. Researchers assessed spinal health using owner-reported symptomatic IVDD in the UK and radiographic intervertebral disc calcification scores in the Scandinavian populations. Smooth-coated dachshunds consistently had significantly poorer spinal health than either long- or wire-coated dogs, while small (miniature/kaninchen) smooth-coated dachshunds generally exhibited the poorest spinal health among all coat-size combinations.

The authors propose that coat-related genes may directly influence spinal health. The RSPO2 gene, which produces the wire-haired coat, may have a protective effect through activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, whereas FGF5, the gene associated with smooth coats, may adversely affect intervertebral disc health. In contrast, body size showed inconsistent associations with spinal health across populations. Overall, the findings support the concept that IVDD is a polygenic disease, rather than one explained solely by the FGF4L2 retrogene.
