💜 September is Su***de Awareness Month 💜

Veterinary medicine is a deeply rewarding profession, but it can also come with unique emotional and mental-health challenges. To all of our veterinary professionals — veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists, groomers, and support staff — we see you.

And to anyone who is struggling, hurting, or quietly fighting battles that no one else can see: you matter, you are loved, and you don’t have to face it alone. 💜

Please take a moment to check in on your people. Send the text. Make the call. Ask, “How are you really doing?” Sometimes a simple reminder that someone cares can mean more than we realize.

🐾 Su***de Prevention & Mental Health Resources

💜 Not One More Vet (NOMV)
NOMV provides mental-health support specifically for the veterinary community, including veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and other veterinary professionals. They offer peer support and wellness resources designed to help those in the field know they aren’t alone.

📞 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
Call or text 988 anytime, 24/7, in the U.S. You don’t have to be suicidal to reach out — if you’re struggling or in emotional distress, help is available.

To our veterinary family: Please remember to take care of yourselves, too. You are an important part of the team, and the world is better with you in it. 💜🐾

On September 11, 2001, one veterinarian saw the smoke rising over Manhattan and ran toward it.

Dr. James Michael Shorter, a Tuskegee-trained veterinarian and Manhattan practice owner, was on his way to work when the attacks began. Instead of waiting to see what would happen, he and Dr. Barbara Kalvig gathered medical supplies, rescheduled appointments, and headed downtown, expecting to find people in need of urgent medical care.

What they found was something different: a city in chaos, a massive search-and-rescue operation, and working dogs entering the rubble at Ground Zero.

For the next 72 hours, Shorter, Kalvig, and their veterinary team cared for search-and-rescue dogs working under some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Using whatever was available from makeshift cooling and cleaning stations to field equipment they helped build a veterinary response that eventually treated roughly 350 dogs with the support of more than 200 veterinarians and technicians.

But Shorter’s contribution didn’t end when the immediate crisis did. The experience helped inspire the creation of the NYC Veterinary Emergency Response Team (NYCVERT), building a lasting framework for animal disaster response in New York City.

His story is a powerful reminder that veterinary medicine doesn’t stop at the clinic door. Sometimes, it means showing up when the world is at its worst and finding a way to help.

🇺🇸🐾 REMEMBERING THE 9/11 K9s 🐾🇺🇸

Today, we remember the brave men, women, and K9 heroes who served during the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

These extraordinary dogs searched tirelessly through the rubble, helped locate survivors, comforted first responders, and brought hope during one of our nation’s darkest moments. They worked without hesitation, driven by loyalty, courage, and an incredible bond with their handlers. 🐕‍🦺❤️

Some searched for survivors.
Some searched for the missing.
Some simply provided comfort when it was needed most.

We remember their courage. We honor their service. We will never forget.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — We Remember.
🐾 Forever honoring the 9/11 K9 heroes.

🌡️🐾 Pet Heat Advisory 🐾🌡️

The Texas heat can be dangerous for our furry family members. As temperatures rise, help keep your pets safe by following these simple tips:

☀️ Walk your pets during the early morning or late evening.
💧 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🌳 Make sure they have access to shade or air conditioning.
🐾 Check the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
😓 Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.

If you think your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion or heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately. Quick action can save their life.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and help your pets beat the heat! ❤️🐶🐱
