I am thrilled to have collaborated with Impulsion Media and the United States Eventing Association, Inc. (USEA) on their Horse First series. Check out Mr. Fox starring in episode 2 where I discuss helping horses regulate their nervous systems. This work helps horses become confident, capable partners while making sure they feel good in the process—both physically and emotionally.

When Tik Maynard tells you that someone is his favorite clinician, you pay attention and that is why we are bringing Kathy Baar to Maine!

This won’t be a typical clinic where you ride for an hour and spend the rest of the day watching from the sidelines. Participants will work with Kathy throughout each day, sometimes as one large collaborative group and sometimes in smaller working groups. That format allows Kathy to offer individualized feedback while also giving everyone the chance to learn deeply from one another’s horses, questions, discoveries, and challenges

𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙆𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮? She is a USDF Gold Medalist, author, horse development specialist, natural horsemanship instructor, liberty trainer, and upper-level event rider who has spent more than 20 years studying and teaching relationship-based horsemanship.

Kathy is known for her calm and thoughtful approach, helping riders understand how timing, body awareness, and feel shape every interaction we have with our horses. Her teaching emphasizes softness, clarity, trust, and communication — on the ground and under saddle.

Whether you’re interested in liberty work, groundwork, improving responsiveness under saddle, working through a particular challenge, or simply developing a deeper relationship with your horse, there will be plenty to explore.

𝗥𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺!

Unexpected Farm is set on a picturesque property in Wales, Maine and offers a well designed space for horses to live, learn, and thrive. Our facilities include a 15 stall round barn, 5 shelters for 24/7 turnout, 90x200 indoor arena, 100x200 outdoor arena, 1/2 mile track, individual turnout with dry lots and grass, indoor and outdoor wash stalls with hot and cold water, tack lockers, full bathroom facilities, 24 hour turnout for all horses (seasonally and weather permitting.)

Throughout the year, the farm also becomes a gathering place for clinics and learning opportunities with some of the best riders and teachers in the industry.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀.

We believe good care starts with paying attention. Every horse has different needs, routines, personalities, and preferences, and we take the time to know the individuals at the farm. From daily management and turnout to feeding, handling, and training, we approach each horse as an individual rather than fitting them into a one-size-fits-all program.

As part of our boarding program, 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱. Regular lessons help keep horses physically and mentally engaged as well as support their ongoing training and development. Just as importantly, it creates an active community of like minded boarders who value continued and thoughtful learning opportunities.

As the week went by, we found ourselves reflecting on last weekend with Warwick Schiller's Attuned Horsemanship.

We’re so grateful to have hosted such a thoughtful group of equestrians who are committed to continued learning, improving their skills, and deepening their understanding for the benefit of their horses.

There are far too many takeaways to list, but we know each participant left with new ideas, tools, and perspectives they can take home and apply with their own horse.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the weekend so special. We hope to see you back at Unexpected Farm for another clinic soon!

Good training starts with paying attention to the horse in front of you.

Every horse is different, and I enjoy figuring out how each one learns best — 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙭, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙠, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙. I want the work to make sense to the horse and rider, with a focus on correct basics, clear communication, and developing the tools they need to continue progressing between training sessions.

I work with a wide range of horses and riders, from young horses just beginning their education to established horses and competitive partnerships looking to refine their work and take the next step.

𝙄’𝙢 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙐𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙁𝙖𝙧𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨, 𝙈𝙀, 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙊𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙖, 𝙁𝙇.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful, individualized training program with an emphasis on producing confident, rideable horses and capable riders, I’d be happy to talk about your goals and see if we might be a good fit.

Last week, we looked at using direct pressure to ask Rennie to lower his head—an especially useful tool when your horse is tall enough to simply put their head out of reach!

In this week's Training Tip, we're taking that same question and asking it in a different way: through rhythmic pressure.

We’re really excited to be welcoming Amelia Newcomb Dressage to Unexpected Farm, October 17 & 18, for two days of education.

One of the reasons we invited Amelia to come to Maine is because so many people asked us to bring her here. We heard you, reached out, and were thrilled when we were able to make the dates work.

And the response from people wanting to come audit has been fantastic. We already know there’s a community excited to learn from her. And now we need more people to sign up to ride.

You can ride either Saturday or Sunday—or make a weekend of it and ride both days.

Amelia is a U.S. Grand Prix dressage rider and trainer, but what I particularly appreciate about her teaching is how clear, practical, and applicable it is. She has a wonderful ability to break complicated concepts down into tools riders can understand, feel, and take home with them.

And you absolutely do NOT need to be an upper-level dressage rider to benefit. If you want to improve your basics, your communication with your horse, your effectiveness in the saddle, or simply understand the how and why behind better riding, I think there will be a tremendous amount to learn.

So, if you were one of the people who said, “You should bring Amelia Newcomb!”—this is me lovingly saying: We did! Now come ride with her! 😊

The thing I love most about my FITS RIDING Ltd gear is that I can ride and teach in it comfortably all day. I'm not in a rush to get out of my uncomfortable restrictive riding clothes the minute I get inside in the evening. They are breathable, move with me, and look great. Get you some! ❤️🐎❤️
