Regulus (Formerly Charlie Brown) and I have been having the best time on the trail together. We are adding miles and building confidence at the same time and he is doing AMAZING! I’m so proud of the progress he has made, especially after the stress of being evacuated for a month because of the Aspen Acres Fire.

And all of a sudden, the little mustang mare, Nimbus, was started under saddle and heading down the trail.

At four years old, Nimbus is still developing both physically and mentally. Like many young horses, she’s going through some awkward stages as she continues to grow, and with a brain as sharp as hers, she gets bored easily. She’s incredibly intelligent, but she’s still very much a baby.

Because of that, her training is built around small, bite-sized pieces of larger concepts that we can revisit, reinforce, and build upon over time.

Her first ride out of the fence—only her second ride ever—was no exception.

This was her first introduction to steering, leg pressure, carrying a rider independently, and navigating obstacles without someone leading her from the ground. Despite having so many new things thrown at her at once, she approached each challenge with curiosity and thoughtfulness, and I couldn’t have been happier with her.

The more I work with this mare, the more convinced I become that she’s going to thrive in the backcountry. She’s the kind of horse that wants a job, wants an adventure, and wants something to think about. For a mind like hers, the arena will never be enough on its own.

🏔🐎 The mountains are the best classroom!

While arenas are great for building a foundation, nothing prepares a horse for the real world quite like getting out and exploring it.

Steep terrain, wildlife, water crossings, fallen logs, blowing brush, traffic, bicycles, hikers, strange objects, and everything else the trail can throw at them—each experience is an opportunity to build confidence, trust, and a horse that thinks before it reacts.

My goal isn’t to create a horse that’s never afraid. My goal is to create a horse that can look to its rider for guidance when something unexpected happens.

Whether you’re hoping for a dependable trail partner, a safer riding experience, or simply a horse that’s more confident in new environments, real-world exposure is one of the most valuable tools we have.

And let’s be honest… there are worse offices than the Colorado mountains. 🏔❤️🐴

🏕️🐎 Welcome to Fat Camp 2026 🐎🏕️

Bikini season is right around the corner, and apparently these guys got the memo.

We’ve had several new horses join the program recently, all with the same goal: improve fitness, build muscle, increase stamina, and get back to feeling their best.

The first few weeks aren’t always glamorous. There’s sweat, heavy breathing, and plenty of questioning my life choices. (The horses do that too.)

But every horse starts somewhere, and it’s incredibly rewarding watching them grow stronger, healthier, and more confident with each ride.

Here’s to smaller hay bellies, stronger toplines, and getting these equine athletes beach-body ready. 💪🐴☀️

Welcoming Ben to the program with this amazing evaluation session and ride. Ben is in for a tune up after being an outfitter horse for the first 13 years of his life. He’s built like a tank but suffers from low confidence. After being evaluated by two other trainers, Ben’s owner was feeling nervous about riding him and scared of getting hurt. She was concerned that his lack of confidence and inability to relax after a solo trail ride started was going to get her hurt, so she reached out to me. After just one session and a hack in the great outdoors by himself, Ben is showing major improvements in his ability to self regulate, pause, and process unfamiliar objects, sounds, or movements in a brand new area! I am truly looking forward to riding this incredible gelding to get him nice and calm for his older owner to safely ride!
