Happy New Year everyone! My crazy life has brought me back to Southern Colorado again until August and I am available for lessons and outside horses. I can even come to you within a reasonable distance. Send me a message if you’re interested and tell your friends! I’m really looking forward to getting back into horses as my mind has been in mom mode the last couple of years! 🐴 😊

Today was a great day for Koa! His owner got to ride him for the first time! Koa was started badly as a c**t and had issues with mounting because of that. I’ve been able to ride him a few times with little issues but horses react differently to different people. Using a mounting block (needed for the owner to mount) was a huge trigger for him so he worked through a lot in the passed few weeks but especially today to be okay with someone else getting on from a mounting block. This horse has a great heart and mind but has issues trusting because of his past. I am really excited to see where him and his owner can go in the future once he learns no one is going to hurt him now!!! ❤️🐴

Koa is a very sweet gelding who wasn’t treated the best as a c**t, which makes him very skiddish. He likes to try to bolt or buck when people go to get on him. His new owner has come a long way with him by herself but asked me to help out. Today, he surprised all of us by letting me gently swing a leg over. Once he gets the confidence and trust that we aren’t going to hurt him, he is going to be on heck of a horse! I am so happy to continue doing what I love, especially in Hawaii of all places!! 🥰🐴

I have been lucky enough to be able to start giving lessons to some pretty awesome kids here in Hawaii. The weather was less then perfect today, windy with intermittent rain storms, but these girls cowgirled up and kept on riding! 💖🐴

As 2020 comes to a close and I am preparing to return to Hawaii, I can’t help but reflect on my 8 months spent in Colorado. This year has been pretty insane for everyone but for me 2020 hasn’t been all bad. Dealing with a deployment on top of covid wasn’t easy but I have built many friendships and learned so much that the good outweighs the bad.

My plan for this year was to train a few horses and rodeo. While I didn’t reach my goal in filling my WPRA Permit, I was able to make more sound decisions about my horse’s career. I never intended on giving riding lessons as I didn’t think I would like it or be good at it. However, I am so glad I did! I grew so much as a person and a trainer and I have met people that I think will be in life for years to come. I was able to work with some babies, which has been a goal of mine, and learn more about different breeds and even learn a little about different disciplines.

Words cannot express my love and gratitude I have for my clients and friends. I am definitely excited to see my husband (it’s been 8 months with very little communication) and to start the next chapter of our lives together as a family but it is certainly a bittersweet goodbye. In the fine words of Winnie the Pooh “How Lucky I Am To Have Something That Makes Saying Goodbye So Hard.”

Thank you to everyone who has made my 2020 a year to remember (in a good way 😆)

Love you all,
Kelsy

It’s common for horses to get excited when they see other horses on the trail. Anytime a horse starts to use the reactive side of his brain and it feels like you’re losing control, redirect his energy in a positive way. When a horse uses the reactive side of his brain, the only way to get him to use the thinking side and put his focus on you rather than what he’s worried about is by moving his feet forwards, backwards, left and right. What you do with your horse isn’t important – what is important is that you move his feet with energy, constantly changing directions.

You can head off most of your problem by not waiting until your horse reacts to other horses before putting his feet to work. Most people would not like to go trail riding with me because I’m constantly weaving in and out of trees, jumping over logs, circling around bushes, sidepassing my horse across the trail, etc. I very rarely put my horse on a loose rein and just let him go down the trail looking for something to spook at. Before you even reach the other horses, put your horse to work, bending him in circles, two-tracking him, practicing transitions, etc., anything you can think of to get his feet moving forwards, backwards, left and right. The more you move his feet and change directions, the more he’ll focus on you and not on the other horses. - Clinton
