๐Ÿถ Why Does My Dog Listen Outside, But Not Inside?

Your dog walks nicely, responds to commands, and seems focused when you're out training... but the second you get home, suddenly it's like they've forgotten everything. Sound familiar? ๐Ÿ˜…

It may seem like your dog is choosing not to listen, but there's usually more going on than simple "stubbornness."

Dogs don't automatically understand that a behavior learned in one environment applies everywhere. Different surroundings, expectations, distractions, and reinforcement histories can completely change how your dog responds.

In our newest blog, we're talking about:

๐Ÿพ Why dogs don't automatically generalize behaviors
๐Ÿพ How household rules affect obedience
๐Ÿพ The distractions you may be overlooking inside
๐Ÿพ Why your dog's energy can change at home
๐Ÿพ How consistency and follow-through make a difference
๐Ÿพ Ways to improve listening inside the house

If your dog seems to have two completely different sets of listening skills depending on where you are, your training hasn't necessarily failed. You may just need to help them bridge the gap between environments.

๐Ÿพ Retractable Leash vs. Long Line: What's the Difference?

Both give your dog more room to explore, but a retractable leash and a long line are NOT the same thing!

Understanding the difference can make a big impact on your dog's safety, training, and leash manners.

๐Ÿšซ Retractable Leash

Retractable leashes allow dogs to move farther away as the leash extends, often creating constant tension.

Some common concerns include:

๐Ÿพ Dogs may learn that pulling earns more distance and freedom.
๐Ÿพ The thin cord can cause injuries if wrapped around people or dogs.
๐Ÿพ Locking mechanisms can fail or be difficult to manage quickly.
๐Ÿพ Less control when your dog encounters unexpected distractions.
๐Ÿพ Constant leash tension can interfere with loose-leash training.

โœ… Long Line

A long line is a fixed-length leash, typically ranging from 10 to 30+ feet, that allows your dog to explore while maintaining a connection to their handler.

Long lines are great for:

๐Ÿพ Practicing recall at greater distances
๐Ÿพ Preparing for off-leash reliability
๐Ÿพ Allowing safe exploration and sniffing
๐Ÿพ Building obedience around distractions
๐Ÿพ Giving your dog freedom while maintaining control

Unlike a retractable leash, a long line allows you to manage the amount of slack and reinforce the idea that freedom doesn't require pulling.

Of course, long lines still require proper handling! Avoid wrapping the line around your hands, be mindful of tangling, and use an appropriate harness when practicing activities that involve running or sudden stops.

The Bottom Line?

More freedom shouldn't mean less communication.

A long line can be an excellent training tool when used correctly, helping your dog learn that freedom comes with responsibility and that listening still matters, even at a distance. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’ก Training Tip Tuesday: Confidence Before Obedience

Before asking a nervous or unsure dog to perform, sometimes we need to focus on helping them feel confident enough to learn.

A dog that's worried about their environment may struggle to focus, respond to cues, or engage with their handler. What looks like stubbornness or disobedience can sometimes be a dog that simply isn't comfortable yet.

Instead of immediately asking for more obedience:

๐Ÿพ Give your dog time to observe and process.
๐Ÿพ Reward curiosity and confident choices.
๐Ÿพ Introduce new environments gradually.
๐Ÿพ Keep challenges achievable.
๐Ÿพ Be someone your dog can look to for clear guidance.

Obedience is important, but confidence helps your dog use those skills when the world gets difficult.

Build the dog first, then build the behaviors. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿถ

We at Perspective K9 looked up some of the most common questions for trainers and sent them to our owner and head trainer Amanda! This is what she said ๐ŸŽค

๐ŸพQuestion #1: What Training Methods Do You Use?๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽคAnswer: โ€œWe like to look at the dog in front of us to decide what methods and techniques we will use. Some dogs take stronger to a positive reinforcement based method with minor corrections to steer in the right direction, while others are more successful with negative reinforcement approaches. While we utilize all four quadrants of operant conditioning, we apply different techniques according to what the dog will respond the best to. One may use more food lures, while one may use more leash pressure/release, and others may use more free shaping/operant/NePoPo style methods. Your trainers will work with you to come up with the plan that best fits you and your dogโ€™s needs!โ€

๐ŸพQuestion #2: How Long Does It Take To Train A Dog?๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽคAnswer: โ€œIt varies! Many breeds are more susceptible to training based on their natural drives for food, toys, physical attention/engagement and more. Some breeds have hundreds of years of genetics backing their natural state of mind, and training can, in some cases, only get us so far, depending on the training goals.

When in doubt, progress comes down to consistency in methods for the dog, fairness & justifiable corrections, and a positive reward system in place.

Our standard obedience board & train is 4 weeks long. This program gives the most efficient time for building solid obedience in the house and out in public.โ€

๐ŸพQuestion #3: Can EVERY Dog Be Trained? Even The Old And Stubborn Ones?๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽคAnswer: โ€œthe short answer is yes. Progress may be slow or cap off at a certain point depending on the dog, but there are almost always additional techniques/methods and approaches we can use to continue training in the right directionโ€

๐ŸพQuestion #4: When Should I Start Puppy Training?๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽคAnswer: โ€œAs soon as possible! The most influential period of a dogโ€™s life is prior to 8 weeks old. By the time most puppies are placed in homes, they are ready for structure, routine & expectations, within reasonโ€

๐Ÿถ Breed Spotlight: Dachshund ๐Ÿถ

Small body, short legs, and a whole lot of personality! The Dachshund may be little, but this breed was originally developed to be a fearless hunter.

Bred in Germany to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals, Dachshunds were designed to be determined, independent, and brave enough to follow prey underground. Those traits are still easy to spot in today's family companions!

โœจ Breed Highlights:
๐Ÿพ Bold, curious, and determined
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Strong sense of smell and natural hunting instincts
โค๏ธ Loyal and affectionate with their families
๐Ÿง  Intelligent, but often independent thinkers
๐Ÿ“ฃ Known for having plenty to say
๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ Many still love digging, burrowing, and exploring

Because Dachshunds were bred to make decisions independently while hunting, training one can sometimes require a little extra patience. Clear expectations, consistency, and finding what motivates your dog can make a huge difference.

Their hunting background can also mean a strong prey drive, alert barking, and a tendency to become very interested in whatever catches their nose!

Don't let those little legs fool you, Dachshunds benefit from training, enrichment, exercise, and opportunities to use their brains just like larger working breeds.

With the right structure and outlets, these little dogs can be confident, entertaining, and incredibly devoted companions. ๐Ÿ’š

Do you have a Dachshund? What's your favorite thing about this big personality in a little package? Share a photo in the comments! ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’ก Training Tip Tuesday: Fulfillment Prevents Problems

Sometimes, unwanted behavior isn't just a training problem, your dog may be missing an appropriate outlet for their needs.

Dogs need more than food, water, and a daily walk. Mental stimulation, physical activity, training, exploration, play, and rest all contribute to a fulfilled dog.

Without healthy outlets, that unused energy can show up as:

๐Ÿพ Excessive barking
๐Ÿพ Destructive chewing
๐Ÿพ Restlessness or pacing
๐Ÿพ Difficulty settling
๐Ÿพ Attention-seeking behaviors
๐Ÿพ Getting into everything around the house

Fulfillment will look different for every dog. A working breed may thrive with challenging training sessions and structured activities, while another dog may benefit from sniffing, exploring, play, or problem-solving games.

Training teaches your dog how to behave, while fulfillment gives them appropriate ways to meet their natural needs.

Remember: Meeting your dog's needs can prevent problems before they start. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’š
