🐾 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Reminder! 🦃

As we celebrate, remember there are many holiday foods that aren’t safe for cats and dogs. Keep these away from your pets:

❌ Toxic & Dangerous Foods

-Onions, garlic, leeks, chives – Can damage red blood cells → anemia.
-Grapes & raisins – Can cause sudden kidney failure.
-Xylitol (in sugar-free gum, candy, some PB) – Can cause severe low blood sugar & liver failure.
-Chocolate – Especially dark/baking chocolate; toxic to pets.
-Alcohol & raw yeast dough – Causes alcohol poisoning, bloating, and other life-threatening issues.
-Cooked bones – Splinter easily → choking or internal injury.
-Nutmeg – Can cause tremors or seizures.

⚠️ High-Fat Holiday Foods to Avoid

These can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis:

-Turkey skin, gravy
-Stuffing/casseroles
-Mashed potatoes (butter, cream, garlic)
-Ham (very salty/fatty)
-Desserts & pies (sugar, chocolate, xylitol)
-Dairy (many pets are lactose intolerant)

🛡️ Holiday Safety Tips

-Secure your trash!
-Keep food off counters and out of reach.
-Ask guests not to feed table scraps.
-Offer pet-safe treats instead: plain boneless turkey, plain green beans, or plain pumpkin.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving with your furry family! 🧡🐶🐱

Today is National - a day encouraging people to learn about and take action to help endangered species.

The AVMA recognizes the vital role of all species in the human-animal-environment complex and that wildlife conservation is most effectively addressed with a One Health approach. Take a moment to learn more about One Health and the role of veterinarians in the movement at avma.org/OneHealth

MIDWEEK MYTHBUSTER! 📢

Many people think that horses can safely eat grass clippings (grass is grass, right?) but that is a pretty common misconception and grass clippings actually pose a number of dangers to our equine friends.

While grass is meant to be slowly picked, ripped and chewed by the horse, grass clippings can quickly clump and cause choke if the animal ingests too many too fast. Grass clippings are also prone to fermentation which can cause colic, stomach and intestinal impactions, founder and laminitis.

Take-home message: Keep your horse away from grass clippings and in general never feed horses any food without the owner’s permission.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.
