Introducing the newest HomeBound Initiative participant-CHARLOTTE🤩

At just over 1 year old and 29 pounds she is our littlest trainee yet😍

Charlotte has some trust issues from her past, so she is working hard to build comfortability in new people. Her volunteer handler got her off to such a great start this past week!❤️‍🩹

We took some time to get Charlotte comfortable in the training room environment, find out what her motivations were-she was a cheese fan but also seemed very people motivated. Then we moved onto some training equipment to assess her confidence and skillset-it seemed she knew SIT and had some leash awareness as she offered good eye contact and attention on a leash!

Charlotte did great exploring a few obstacles, but we didn’t ask too much of her this first session as we really just wanted her to get used to the new environment in a low pressure way.

She did work REALLY well in the presence of other dogs-she could not have cared less that they were there😆 Which is a great sign in a young pup-not being overly interested in other dogs so everyone can coexist in a productive and neutral manner. And she had no accidents during the time she was out for her training👏🏼Another great sign from a young pup put into a new, exciting environment!

We cannot wait to see Charlotte open up more over time in training-but she (of course) would have faster progress in a HOME environment.

She is the ultimate loyal, companion dog that needs to find HER person. She may be slow to warm up, understandably💔 Call Lucas County Canine Care & Control today and ask to hear more about her story.
Foster. Adopt. Share.

Absolutely love what I do- every single day.
But nothing compares to this.
Seeing a shelter dog with a heartbreaking or even unknown backstory, finally decide to trust you.
To try that thing, learn that skill, build their confidence, trust you to lead them.
Rescue work will always be a huge part of me❤️‍🩹
Because all dogs deserve to trust like THIS💚

Polite Greeting Progression🙌🏼
Perfect for pups, excited dogs, nervous dogs or any dog who lives in a home where visitors are common!
1-Set this routine once your dog has a solid skill set. Your dog is tethered or anchored while a person approaches and calmly asks for a sit. The most important part of this is that they are OUTSIDE of leash length so they cannot get jumped on if the dog decides to rear up. Once the dog sits, the greeter tosses a yummy snack BEHIND the dog, allowing them to move away, reset, then choose to approach again.
2-Add distractions & different people. This is a great step for you to start growing your dogs threshold when you practice-get low, get on roller skates, make your voice low, skip up to your dog, get them used to being approached in all kind of crazy ways and still getting that polite greeting behavior of a sit (or at least 4 on the floor if that’s your preference). This is also where you can start asking for help from your support system. Neighbors with young kids, elderly relatives, men with beards, women in hats, anyone to help your dog practice and understand someone approaching=polite behavior =snacks✅
3-Now we’re working toward the real-life goal: a guest coming into the home and eventually just existing in your home without your dog feeling like they need to be at level 100 the entire time.
Practice short, controlled, positive interactions.

Progression, repetition, and helping your dog succeed are what make the difference!

🤩JERSEY’S FIRST TRAINING SESSION🤩

Jersey is a 1 year, 4 month old boy who has been at the shelter since May. He was adopted as a puppy, but sadly returned after his owner passed away 💔

When we started his first training session, it didn’t appear that Jersey had much experience with basic skills like “sit.” So instead of expecting him to know things he’s never been taught, we started exactly where he needed us to.

Jersey worked on:
•Beginning a sit
•Attention & engagement games
•Getting comfortable and confident with new human volunteers
•Exploring obstacles and new surfaces
•Handling and cooperative interactions
•Working around other dogs

That last one was a BIG win. Jersey seemed interested in the other dogs working and wanted to play, but he was able to disengage, redirect his attention, and focus back on his handler - an important skill for any dog learning how to navigate the real world 👏🏼

And the obstacle exploration? It’s more important than it might look. Asking a dog to climb, step onto, or move across unfamiliar, elevated surfaces gives them opportunities to think through something new, use their body in different ways, and discover that “I can do this!” For a dog who may not have had much opportunity to learn or explore, those little wins can make a BIG difference in confidence.

Jersey is still very much a puppy - just a more medium-sized one. And he has SO much potential.

This is what shelter training is about: giving dogs the skills, confidence, and experiences that can help them succeed in their forever homes.

And Jersey is ready for that forever home🏡

ADOPT JERSEY💙🧡💚

The Homebound Initiative is finally here! 🏡🐾

This has been a passion project years in the making-dating back to 2022, when it started as my internship project.

My love of training rivals my love for rescue work. Both have the power to make a REAL difference in a dog’s life. And there’s no better place to start than the heart of my community: Lucas County.

Toledo is heavily populated with stray and surrendered dogs, and for so many, the shelter becomes part of their story.

I’ve fostered 3 dogs through LucasCo.CanineCare&Control and worked with many more through training, enrichment, and volunteer efforts. What never ceases to amaze me is their resilience-and the INSANE amount of potential in these dogs.

Amazing, loving, smart dogs who may just need a little time, guidance, confidence, or someone willing to look beyond the kennel and see who they could become.

That’s where Homebound comes in🤩🏡

Through a partnership between Buck Wild Dog Training, Friends of Lucas County Dogs , and LucasCo.CanineCare&Control, selected shelter dogs will receive individualized training and real-life skill building while they wait for their forever homes.

This isn’t about making shelter dogs “perfect.” It’s about making them more understood, prepared, and visible-while building skills that can help make the transition from shelter life to home a little smoother.

And then, we get to show people their personality, potential, and progress.

Because sometimes the difference between being overlooked and being chosen is simply giving people the chance to see a dog outside of their kennel.

These 3 dogs are officially our very first Homebound participants! 😍💚

They’re the beginning of something I’ve wanted to build for a very long time, and I’m so excited to finally see it become REAL 😭

My hope is that we can grow this program, reach more dogs, increase their visibility, build their home-readiness, and help more of them make that final transition:

From shelter dog... to HOMEBOUND 🐾🏡

This is just the beginning.

Buck Wild Dog Training × Friends of Lucas County Dogs × Lucas County Canine

Three organizations. A lot of people who care. And a whole lot of dogs worth fighting for. ❤️‍🩹

Super excited to announce a passion project tomorrow as all the behind the scenes pieces finally come together 🙊🥹😍🤫🤭

Properly exercising your dog is the single best way to improve their focus and performance for training🗣️
Having pent-up energy means dogs are less likely to process commands, the need to move will outweigh whatever you’re getting to work on, and likely result in more problem behaviors 😣

Anyways, here’s client Max after a quick 30 minute neighborhood stroll😍 He definitely still has room for improvement on his leash walking skills, but sometimes the need for exercise fulfillment comes first !
