🐾❤️ Some Heroes Wore Collars ❤️🐾
Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the countless first responders, volunteers, and everyday people who showed extraordinary courage during one of our nation’s darkest moments.
But among those heroes were some who couldn’t tell us their stories themselves...man’s best friend. 🐕❤️
More than 300 specially trained dogs are estimated to have assisted at Ground Zero. Alongside their handlers, search and rescue dogs climbed through unstable rubble and debris searching for survivors. As the mission shifted from rescue to recovery, other K9 teams helped locate victims so families could have answers. Some dogs worked shifts lasting as long as 12 hours in incredibly difficult conditions.
And their impact went beyond what they were trained to do.
Therapy and comfort dogs provided something desperately needed during those days: a quiet moment of comfort. Firefighters, rescue workers, and grieving families could sit beside them, pet them, hug them, and find a little bit of peace in the middle of unimaginable devastation. Even some of the search dogs became an unexpected source of comfort for exhausted responders.
They searched. They comforted. They worked beside their handlers. And when humans needed them most, they were there. ❤️🐾
