Fall migration is in full swing over Oakland County!

According to BirdCast, more than 1.6 million birds crossed Oakland County last night, with peak migration traffic reaching an estimated 376,800 birds in flight at one time. That’s a lot of birds moving overhead while most of us are sleeping!

Keep an eye on your feeders, trees and shrubs over the next few weeks. Migration can bring species through our area that we may only see briefly during their journey south.

Fall migration is an important time to make your yard a reliable stopover for birds traveling through Michigan.

Keep feeders stocked with high-quality foods, offer a dependable source of fresh water, and leave native flowers and seed heads standing when possible. Because many songbirds migrate at night, reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting can also help them travel more safely.

And keep your binoculars nearby. Migration season is one of the best times of year to spot birds that may only visit our area briefly.
