Winnie will be 10 in two months. I’ve had her since she was a puppy, and over the past couple of years, I’ve really started to notice her slowing down.

She still has those bursts of energy, but her legs aren’t what they used to be. I try my best to find that balance between keeping her active and knowing when she needs to rest. Today we took our time exploring the woods, letting her move at her own pace.

She’s still doing well, and I’m grateful for that. But watching her get older is a hard reality to accept. I just want to keep giving her the fullest life I can, for as long as I can.

There’s a lot of questioning that comes with building a life that doesn’t have a roadmap.

Am I doing enough? Am I making the right decisions? Is this thing I’m hoping for going to work out? What if that other thing falls through? Am I growing too fast, not fast enough, or somehow both?

Sometimes I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Other times my brain convinces me I should already be further ahead. And there’s always another decision to make, another problem to solve, another thing I’m trying to figure out.

Then Winnie does this.

Just quietly lays her head on me like none of those things are nearly as important as I’ve made them in my head.

And for a minute, I stop trying to figure everything out.

Somehow I believe her when she tells me everything is going to be okay.
