Sunset at the Zoo supports real, meaningful work behind the scenes. Here are just a few milestones we achieved last year with the help of supporters like you:

🦁 Expert Care: We provided dedicated, individualized care to more than 2,000 animals — including three healthy and thriving lion cubs.

🐦 Conservation: We saw a record-breaking year for the endangered Great Lakes piping plover. Our team contributed to the program by helping to incubate and raise 36 abandoned plover eggs into independent chicks who were released back into the wild.

🎓 Education: We provided 8,356 students and chaperones from classrooms in need with a free day of learning through our Day at the Zoo program.

If there’s one night a year you support the Detroit Zoo, June 18 is it.

Limited tickets are available. Reserve your place: https://detroitzoo.org/events/sunset-at-the-zoo/

Happy birthday, Tai!

This playful and sweet chimpanzee turned 3 this week in a very cool way – with special fruity ice enrichment! They were a big hit with Tai and the rest of the troop.

Check-up time for the otter pups! 🩺

The Detroit Zoo veterinary team just completed the pup's 4-week health exam. During the exam, it was determined that all three of these adorable otters are female and developing at a healthy rate.

The animal care team will continue to track their progress while the pups stay cozy behind the scenes with their doting mom, Kalee.

We estimate that they will be ready to explore their outdoor habitat sometime in late June. Until then, you can continue to follow these girls' growth on our social media pages.

Late this afternoon, we were made aware of a threat directed at the Detroit Zoo. We worked in close coordination with local authorities, and upon further investigation, it was determined there was no credible threat.

Similar calls have been reported at zoos across the country in recent weeks, with no related incidents or harm reported.

The safety and well-being of our guests, staff, volunteers and animals who call the Zoo home is our highest priority. We appreciate the understanding and support of our community during this time.

The Zoo will remain open tomorrow (Wednesday, May 27) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for normal operating hours. Tomorrow’s Tri-County Senior Day will also resume as planned.

A few final touches are still underway for the prairie dogs and burrowing owls. 🦉🐾

Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails opens this weekend, and there will be so much to explore from day one. As we complete the prairie dog and burrowing owl habitat, these two species will make their debut in the coming weeks.

Recent weather delays impacted final habitat preparations, and we’re taking the extra time needed to ensure the space is fully ready before the animals move in.

Creating exceptional habitats where animals can thrive will always come first, and we can’t wait to welcome prairie dogs and burrowing owls to Erb Discovery Trails soon.

In the meantime, guests can still experience immersive new habitats, hands-on discovery, aerial exploration and so much more beginning May 23. Learn more: https://detroitzoo.org/discovery-trails/

Mother’s Day brought an extremely moving moment for our team at the Detroit Zoo 🐾

Ahead of their anticipated debut in Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails, bush dog parents Dulce and Churro welcomed two healthy pups on Mother's Day, joining big sister Mirabel as part of the family pack.

Bush dogs are highly social animals, and raising pups is a true family effort. Right now, the entire pack is spending quiet time behind the scenes bonding and caring for the newborns as they grow. That means the bush dogs won’t yet be visible to guests while the pups continue to grow and reach important developmental milestones.

Until then, we’ll be sharing updates and plenty more adorable moments along the way. 🩵

We can’t wait to introduce you to the whole family!
