Major key 🔑: Because mast cell tumors (MCT) have the potential release chemicals when they’re manipulated during surgery, and can lead to problems such as swelling, low blood pressure, stomach ulcers, vomiting, or allergic-type reactions(ie severe itch or even anaphylaxis, etc…), medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and famotidine beforehand helps block the effects of histamine and makes the procedure safer for my patients 🙂🩺

My protocol:
1. Start 2mg/kg diphenhydramine and 0.5mg/kg famotidine PO for a week leading up to the surgery
2. Cytopoint injection 1 week before the surgery
3. Diphenhydramine 2 mg/kg IM about 30 minutes before surgery
4. Famotidine 0.5–1 mg/kg IV slow at the same time
5. Continue 2mg/kg diphenhydramine and 0.5mg/kg famotidine PO for a week after the surgery

Got a few of questions about how to perform the cranial drawer test after yesterdays CCL rupture post 🙂🩺

So made the post to show the test up close and the landmarks I like to use to do it! 🤓

1️⃣ First you put one finger on the patella (knee cap 🧢)
2️⃣ Then you put the other finger on the tibial crest 🦴
3️⃣ Then try to slide the tibial crest forward and backwards 👈🏼👉🏼

This test tests for the stability of the knee joint And the abnormal forward movement of the tibia (lower leg bone) in front of the femur (thigh bone) indicates laxity in the knee joint caused by a CCL rupture 😰 giving us a positive cranial drawer test ✅

Remember this case from last week? 👀

Biopsy results had come back as: Canine cutaneous melanocytic tumor 😮…which can have variable biological behavior🤔…but luckily, this one came back with benign characteristics 😮‍💨😁🙌🏼

Glad we have good news for the family! But because of the variable behavior of these masses, I would still stay vigilant and look for any weird looking masses as they come up in the future! 🙌🏼🩺
