Some dog breeds can disappear.

It’s something many people outside the dog world may never have considered.

While some breeds number in the tens or hundreds of thousands, others exist in remarkably small populations, like this Bergamasco Sheepdog puppy pictured. And when those numbers become too small, preserving genetic diversity, health, temperament, working ability and the characteristics that make that breed unique becomes increasingly difficult.

This is preservation breeding in its most literal sense.

These breeds aren’t simply different-looking dogs. Many carry generations—sometimes centuries—of history. They were developed for particular places, people and purposes, and responsible breeders today are working to make sure that history doesn’t end with the dogs currently alive.

Preservation isn’t about keeping dogs in the past.

It’s about making sure they have a future.
