The part of dog guardianship people don’t prepare you for (but they shouldn’t have to).

You don’t bring home a dog.
You bring home a relationship.
And relationships?
They require compromise.
Not perfection.

When most people imagine life with their dog, it looks like an easy, seamless fit. Same routines. Same expectations. Same pace.
But the truth is… your dog is not a blank slate.

They come with a history.
A nervous system.
Preferences you didn’t vote on.

I talk about this more in my recent blog. Linked in bio.

Have you experienced this feeling of expecting one thing but getting another when adopting a new dog? I’d love to hear more about it.

Lately, I’ve been sitting with a lot. With my clients. With their dogs.
Holding space for others while also navigating my own reality with Rodger’s health challenges… it’s been lonely in a way that’s hard to put into words.
There’s a heaviness in the world, in every room, more often than not… and if I’m honest, I’m feeling it too.
But this work has never been about keeping score. It’s never been about who has more, who is doing more, who is struggling “worse.”
All I know is the way people show up for others says everything.
Even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.
Rodger reminds me of that every day.
So if you’re here, if you’re trying, if you’re carrying something heavy too…I see you. I’m still here with you.

Crate training does not prevent separation anxiety.

Crate training does not “fix” separation anxiety.

Crates can be a very valuable tool when used appropriately but they are not a cure.

Helping your dog gradually learn that alone time is safe is the best way to succeed.

Understanding how to properly expose young puppies and adolescent dogs to being alone starts them off with the best chances at success.

My dog is smart. They are a good dog. Except….

I hear this all the time during new consults and it breaks my heart.

People think their dog is broken.
Bad. Misbehaving.

Or worse they think I’m going to tell them they’ve done something wrong.

Your dog doesn’t have separation anxiety from sleeping in your bed.
Your greeting didn’t cause this.
You sharing food didn’t cause this.

Separation anxiety is a welfare issue. Your dog is panicking, in distress beyond their control, when left alone. It isn’t disobedience or lack of leadership.

Being realistic about how to help them is as important as understanding what is going on.

Be wary of a dog training guarantee!

Dogs are not robots. What works for one may not work for another, any skilled and ethical professional knows this.

Separation anxiety is often complicated. Getting a one size fits all handout will rarely be all you need to help your dog but it can be a starting place.

Then you decide if you want to be the one to figure out all of the other details like how your dog’s routine, age, environment, health, fears and stressors all affect outcome.

I can help a little or lead every step of the way.

When you’re ready - let’s talk!

Valentine’s reminder - responding to your separation anxiety dog’s feelings or your reactive dogs needs isn’t indulgence. It’s emotional safety.

When we listen early, we prevent bigger struggles later. That’s love.

Deinfluencing being a dog mom 🐶

What your dog wants more than that fancy new enrichment toy is probably more time with you (not just time sitting next to you while you doom scroll)

Your dog wants to sniff their favorite spot for 2 minutes instead of the 10 seconds you think is “long enough”

Dogs are often most happy and healthy when we’re enriching their lives by allowing them to be dogs. Running, digging, sniffing, chewing, shredding and socializing.

This doesn’t mean you need all of the fancy and expensive things being sold to you.

Your dog wants to be a dog and they want you to be there with them.

Feel the same? You’re in the right place.
