"You want how much?"
I hear this so often when folks ask about a c**t or young horse I have for sale. Most people have no idea all that goes into getting a baby on the ground, much less to keep it going and then to get it started.
Everyone wants the good ones, but are they willing to pay the price? They all want the sires and dams that are Dual Rey, High Brow Cat, Peptoboonsmal, Shorty Lena, etc. for their foals.
As the owner of a breeding operation, this is what it takes to simply get that foal on the ground, and I have tried to be very conservative with my estimates.
Stud Fee + Chute Fee $4,000
Vet Fee For Breeding $ 500
Feed (48 weeks) $ 960
Hay (48 weeks) $ 500
Farrier (every 6 weeks) $ 480
Vaccines $ 125
TOTAL $6,065
This does not include the cost of the mare. If you want a mare with current, relevant bloodlines, you will be lucky to get into one for less that $15,000. Especially if she is an earner or producer of earners. If you are really lucky, you might run across one that is broodmare sound only for around $5,000.
If you own your stallion, there are the costs of the breeding reports, DNA, genetic testing and then registration of the foal in the appropriate association. And then add on the cost of buying that stallion.
Once the foal is on the ground, then the real work begins to include more feed, hay, vet bills, etc....and lots and lots of time, which has not even been considered!
If an owner keeps the foal and pits a good start on that c**t of at least 90 days, that cost is at least $3,000.
Those of us that are breeders, we don't do it for the money. We do it because it is our passion. We love seeing those babies born and want the best for them. We want them to go on and do well, we want them to have owners that love and appreciate them and that use them for the job they were bred to do.
So, forgive me if I am a little frosty when I politely decline the offer you make of $500 or $1,000 for a foal that I have priced at $3,500.
I love what I do, I am truly blessed to be able to live out my childhood dream. I only hope to be blessed enough to keep doing it for many more years to come.
