There are no words heavy enough for a day like today.
Sergeant Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty late last night.
Behind that badge was a man with a family, friends, fellow officers and a community that expected him to come home. Today, they are facing a loss that can never be made right.
Those who serve in small departments understand something the rest of the world often does not: there is no “routine” call, no harmless shift and no guarantee that the person you spoke to before work will walk back through the door afterward.
Still, they put on the uniform.
Still, they answer the call.
Still, they run toward the danger while everyone else is trying to get away from it.
The man accused of murdering Sergeant Fisher fled Georgia, setting off a search that crossed state lines. When law enforcement closed in on him in Anderson County, South Carolina, he took the coward’s way out and killed himself.
He will never stand before a judge. He will never be forced to answer Sergeant Fisher’s family, his fellow officers or the community whose sense of safety he shattered. He chose escape over accountability.
But his cowardice will not be the story remembered.
Sergeant Fisher’s courage will be.
We will remember the man who answered the call. We will remember the uniform he wore, the communities he served and the sacrifice he made. We will remember that while one man ran from the consequences of his actions, law-enforcement officers across two states ran toward the danger to bring the search to an end.
Today, Georgia’s law-enforcement family is grieving.
Hurricane Creek K9 extends our deepest condolences to Sergeant Fisher’s family, the men and women of the Warm Springs Police Department, his former colleagues throughout Meriwether, Fayette and Heard counties, and every officer involved in the search.
Rest easy, Sergeant Fisher. Your watch is over. Your brothers and sisters will carry it from here.
We will remember your name.
We will remember your service.
We will remember your sacrifice.
Sergeant Chris Fisher
