Liberty update, we finally received test results from her visit with the specialist/internist..
Liberty’s 2M antibody test was strongly positive, confirming masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) as the cause of her restricted mouth opening and severe loss of the chewing muscles. Based on this result, I do not think a CT scan is necessary at this time unless her condition worsens or she does not respond as expected.
Her remaining blood and urine tests were reassuring overall and did not identify a reason that we could not start treatment. There were a few mild abnormalities, including a mildly low albumin, that we will monitor. Her kidney and liver values were normal, and there was no evidence of a urinary infection or significant urinary protein loss.
I recommend starting prednisone to suppress the immune reaction affecting her chewing muscles. We should recheck Liberty in approximately 4 weeks to assess labs (for side effects of prednisone), her comfort, weight, ability to eat, and measure the mouth opening again to compare. Depending on labs and physical exam, we will start tapering the dose slowly.
I also recommend stopping the Thyro-Tabs, as her previous testing did not establish that she is truly hypothyroid. The medication does not need to be tapered. We can repeat a complete thyroid panel.
We have scheduled a visit with a veterinary ophthalmologist, but they cant get us in until November, this is crazy.
She seems to be in good spirits, she even started to eat a little kibble. She is one of the sweetest dogs and deserves the very best. Please continue to pray for our girl as we tske her through this medical journey and healing.
This last visit to the internist coat the rescue $1317.52. This was for all testing, not even to treat her yet! If anyone is able to donate towards her medical, we would be so grateful. We also understand the struggles, if you are unable to donate, could you please share her story. Donations can be sent through Chase, Zelle, Paypal using our email [email protected]
With the unknown of what the future medical costs for Liberty, sadly we have to pause on intakes. We had committed to Ziggy and he is here.
