Confidence is built through trust, small approximations, and big wins.

There are certainly times where it should be done by limiting the dog’s choices and pushing them through it, but there are also times where the freedom of choice is just as important!

When people ask me when they should start training their puppy, THIS is what I mean when I say as soon as possible!

Yes, that includes the matter of already having conditioned your dog to grooming. IN ALL TECHNICALITY, it’s balanced dog training.

Practicing impulse control around other dogs is such an unexpected yet important skill in the proofing phase πŸ™ŒπŸ» tell me, have you worked on this with your dog?

When trainers say that you can keep sessions under five minutes, they literally mean that you can keep it under five minutesπŸ™ŒπŸ»

I love incorporating some obedience into my dog’s breakfasts! It keeps them fresh and speedy in their movements.

How to encourage environmental resilience in your puppiesπŸ™ŒπŸ»

Markers like "yes" are usually pretty simple to teach. It's all about consistency and many repetitions.

Once it's conditioned you should get a big response out of your dog upon hearing the "yes" marker. It's a reward marker, meaning a reward will always follow, and that the dog has to come to you to get that reward.

Let me know if you'd like to see the difference between the reward markers "yes" and "good" next!

I came across a post talking about the difference between neutrality and regulation, and SUCH a great point was made.

Regulation is the goal. It's an emotional state. Neutrality is an external picture. It can be misleading.

If I were to interfere with AJ's reaction to the blender in this moment, it would set her back and prevent her from truly regulating herself.

If I coddled her it might reinforce the fear reaction. If she broke position and I corrected her, it would suppress her real emotions and lead to surface neutrality, not regulation.

Calm guidance, with little to no input is what dogs need in these situations. If she had broken position, I would've allowed her to process the situation, before calmly asking for a down again. However, she maintained position, so I allowed her to observe and surpass the initial startle, and I offered quiet praise when she refocused on me.

Finding that happy medium when building environmental stability and confidence is so important. Knowing the dog in front of you and when to push them versus when to take a step back is crucialπŸ™ŒπŸ»
