This is the season that we start to see Bobcat Fever in cats, so we wanted to provide some education on it for you.
Cytauxzoonosis, commonly known as Bobcat Fever, is a serious tick-borne disease that is unfortunately common in our area. It is caused by a parasite transmitted through tick bites.
After a tick bite, cats typically begin to show signs within 10-14 days. Early signs you may notice at home include:
Lethargy (more tired than usual)
Decreased appetite
Pale gums

As the disease progresses, cats can become severely ill. In the clinic, we often see:
High fever
Dehydration
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin, gums, or eyes)
Overall weakness or collapse

This parasite multiplies in the bloodstream and can affect multiple organs. Bobcat Fever progresses very rapidly and can become life-threatening, sometimes causing death within 2-3 days after a high fever develops.
Diagnosis is typically made through:
Physical exams
Bloodwork
Identification of the parasite under a microscope.

Treatment requires aggressive supportive care, which may iclude:
Hospitalization
IV fluids
Antibiotics
Anti-protozoal medication

Storm Season Is Here...and your pets will be able to tell it too.
Loud thunder, flashing lightening, heavy rain, hail pinging down and howling winds. All of this makes our fur babies shake, hide, or cling to you during the storm.
