💧🐾 Making Waves in the Water Industry — One Paw at a Time! 🐾💧

Walnut Grove K9s is excited to be part of the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA) conference!

We’re proud to share how K9-assisted water leak detection can bring an innovative, efficient, and effective approach to identifying leaks in drinking water systems. Our canine partners offer a unique tool to help utilities locate leaks, reduce water loss, conserve valuable resources, and save money.

It’s all about connecting with industry leaders, sharing knowledge, and helping more water utilities discover what a well-trained nose can do! 🐕💦

A big thank-you to everyone working to protect our drinking water infrastructure. We’re excited to be part of the conversation and help bring K9-assisted leak detection to more communities!

2-year-old River is one of the first canines in the region to sniff out leaks.

🐾 Move over high-tech sensors, the ultimate leak detector has four legs and a tail! 🐶💧

The Bureau of Reclamation's report, "Final_ST Report_22081_w App_508_2025-03-07.pdf", highlights how trained canines are revolutionizing water conservation. Here is why this method holds so much promise:

High Accuracy: Active leaks are routinely confirmed within just 5 feet of a canine alert, with some dogs boasting a 99.7% detection rate up to 15 feet deep!

Super Senses: With 300 million olfactory receptors, they sniff out chlorine at parts per trillion—like finding one drop in an Olympic pool!

Material Blind: Unlike acoustic tech that struggles on concrete, plastic, or composite pipes, dogs don't care about pipe material. If it leaks, they smell it.

Raw Water Breakthrough: Trials proved canines successfully detect leaks in untreated raw water lines without needing any chemical tracers injected.

Real Impact: In South Dakota, the team found a remote, hidden break leaking 10+ gallons per minute, saving thousands in water loss.

The Best Part? It is non-invasive, highly cost-effective, and pipelines stay fully in service while the dogs work. Plus, walking the alignment helps operators spot other remote infrastructure issues before they escalate.
