This is number 61 for this year. 7 more done today, I have been trying something a bit different. The last two runs I have left the hide on the heads and boiled.

The positives: don’t go through as many replaceable knife blades, which is a cost savaings. The hide protects the skull better and you can boil the water down lower and the hide peals right off.

I would not call them negative more like dislikes. Leaving the hide on makes a bigger mess when washing, more meaty flesh to blow off plus the hide and hair build up. The really tuff stuff connected to the skull dose not cook as well and you have to spend more time power washing.

I think the decision it comes down to is time and the condition of the deer head. I can skin a deer head out on about 5-7 minutes but the drier the head is the more attached the skin is to the bone making it much more difficult to get off.

When weather conditions dictate when you can work on them like this last run much easier to just put hide and all in to boil.

You got any questions shoot me a message or call be glad to share my experiences with you.

At the end of the day the toughest part of a European mount is the smell of it cooking.

Thanksgiving weekend is when I typically try to work on the mounts but the forecast looks horrible. So I’m working on them this week as they come in, if you get a chance bring them by sooner than later as it may be a while if we get a cold December and January as the forecast calls for. But we all know how that goes with the forecast.
