Let’s have a Tick Talk!
This year, we're facing a heavy tick season, especially after a milder winter. In our area of southwest Missouri, ticks are on the rise, and they can carry some nasty illnesses like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and the super duper lovely Alpha-Gal. Even treated dogs are picking up them up, but that's where treatment comes in: it's designed to kill the ticks before they can transmit any diseases. Greatly reducing the spread of these tick borne diseases.
We have a strict no-tick policy here at our facility, and I want to quickly go over what that means for your pet. If your pets on a preventative and they have a tick or two, dead or alive, and it goes unnoticed. That is fine, if we can clearly see the head we will remove it for you. However, if the tick is really burrowed in then out of an abundance of precaution we will let you know the location of the tick but you’ll have to remove it. We ask that you throughly check your pets over before bringing them in. If your pet is covered in ticks you’ll be sent home immediately as we can’t properly do our job and risking the health of other pets in our care or our staff is a nonnegotiable.
Flea and tick prevention isn’t just a recommendation; it’s a necessity. Please protect your pets, friends, and family by keeping your pets on monthly preventatives. This also helps keep the population of ticks down by preventing breeding.
Let’s work together to keep everyone tick-free this season. If you have any questions about prevention strategies or treatments, don’t hesitate to reach out!
