Be aware! A raccoon was trapped in Nashville that tested positive for rabies. Protect yourself and your pets by making sure your pets’ rabies vaccinations are up to date. As a reminder, every dog, cat, and ferret over 16 weeks of age is required to have a current rabies vaccine, per North Carolina state law. Let us know if we can help!

Nash County Confirms Rabies-Positive Raccoon Captured in Nashville

NASH COUNTY, N.C. — The Nash County Health Department is alerting the public after a raccoon captured near East Washington Street and Eastern Avenue in Nashville tested positive for rabies. Nash County Animal Services captured the raccoon after receiving a report that the animal was behaving erratically. The raccoon was sent to the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health, where testing confirmed that it was infected with rabies.

The animal was described as a gray and black adult raccoon, weighing approximately 30-40 pounds. Anyone who may have had direct contact with a raccoon matching this description in the East Washington Street and Eastern Avenue area between June 25 and July 10, 2026, should immediately call the Nash County Health Department’s Communicable Disease Control line at 252-382-0904.

Direct contact may include being bitten or scratched or having the animal’s saliva come into contact with broken skin, an open wound, the eyes, nose or mouth. A Nash County public health nurse can assess residents’ potential exposure and determine whether rabies post-exposure treatment is recommended.

“Residents should contact Nash County Health Department if they have any questions or concerns about possible exposure,” said Nash County Health Director Angela Manning. “Residents may call the Communicable Disease Control line at 252-382-0904 if outside normal business hours or on the weekend."

To prevent possible rabies exposure, residents are encouraged to take the following precautions:

• Do not approach, touch, feed or attempt to capture wild animals.
• Teach children to stay away from wild, stray or unfamiliar animals.
• Keep family pets current on their rabies vaccinations, as required by North Carolina law.
• Secure garbage containers and avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
• Report an animal behaving unusually to Nash County Animal Control at 252-459 9855.

We are heartbroken to learn of Officer Cotton’s passing. He was always helpful to us in handling and providing medical care for Forrest and Leo. He will be greatly missed. We are praying for his family and loved ones.

The Rocky Mount Police Department Mourns The Loss of Officer Michael Cotton

Officer Cotton passed away in an off-duty ATV accident in the evening hours on June 10th, 2026.

He served in the United States Military and the Army Reserve for numerous years, while simultaneously serving the Rocky Mount community as a sworn law enforcement officer for 7 years. He had been a K9 officer since 2023. He truly had a passion for law enforcement and for working alongside his K9 partners.

Officer Cotton’s first K9, FORREST, retired and was awarded to him by the city council, and is now a part of Officer Cotton's immediate family.

Officer Cotton had a milestone in his career when he became the agencies 1st African American K9 handler. In February 2026, he successfully completed the rigorous training program with his second K9, LEO, an Explosive Detection K9.

Officer Cotton holds an associate degree in Criminal Justice Technology honors from Nash Community College. Officer Cotton would have celebrated his 30th birthday on June 15th.

Officer Cotton was more than a colleague; he was family. Our hearts go out to his loved ones.

We thank the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Wilson County Emergency Services for their ongoing efforts in this investigation, and to all law enforcement agencies for their support and assistance during this difficult time.

We are grateful for the condolences from our community. Thank you.

It’s been a great week at the ball fields! The team Magnolia Grace sponsored won the regular season championship in the Pee-Wee Division. Dr. Turbyfill’s oldest son plays on the team that won the regular season championship in the Minors Division! Congratulations to all of these kids! We feel blessed to be able to sponsor youth sports for the kids in our community. We love seeing the kids having fun and learning teamwork and camaraderie. We have BIG news to share! For almost 5 and 1/2 years, we’ve been appreciative of the opportunity to lease 110 Zebulon Ct. This year, we have had the opportunity to purchase our own real estate, which will provide us a long-term home of our own. We have some renovations to do, so we won’t be moving until 2027. But we’re excited to announce that we will be making a future transition to 3151 Benvenue Road!

Not all online pharmacies are the same!
Unfortunately, one of our patients is one of the dogs that was affected/harmed by this product. Fortunately for our patient, it looks like he will make a full recovery with no long term effects. If you don't read the whole article, the summary is:
This company was selling "Allergy pills" online without prescriptions, claiming it was an over-the-counter product. However, the label on the bottle says that the pills contain cyclosporine, which is a prescription immune-modulating drug. BUT, the dogs who have been taking the pills are experiencing side effects and liver issues that cyclosporine should NOT cause. Currently there is evidence that the pills actually contain corticosteroids, which is a different class of prescription drugs. All of this is VERY illegal. However, drug and law enforcement agencies currently face so many issues they need to address, it is uncertain if anyone at this company will be held accountable for the harm they have done to dogs across the country. We are participating in trying to pursue action, but the outcome is yet to be seen.
Please be very careful when purchasing products for your pets online. Feel free to ask us if you have any questions before making a purchase. We are also going to post some links in the comments from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) with advice about getting safe prescriptions.
