What is ADA?!?
It’s the Americans with Disabilities Act and it’s the federal laws that guide service dog requirements and public accommodations. Service Dogs fall under Title II and Title III of the law!

September is Service Dog Awareness Month!! We’ll be sharing about some of our teams and some information as well about what a Service Dog is and what they can do for their partners!

First up- some terms:
Service Dog in Training- a pup who is still training to be a service dog but has a lot of skills already and may have already mastered a task or two!

Service Dog- a dog who is well behaved in public, is task trained on a specific skill (or multiple skills) and most likely has passed their Canine Good Citizen and Urban Canine Good Citizen courses.

In Texas, both Service Dogs and Service Dogs in Training have public access rights through state and federal law.

Jasper loves his job- identifying peanut, dairy and eggs in foods to prevent anaphylactic reactions in his human kids. He gets a little too excited sometimes and you’ll see him give a false positive but then quickly fix it in the re-check of the White Castle Burgers, but he was flawless with the other two items!

The only dairy in the pretzels is actually frozen butter packets so that was an impressive catch!

Sometimes service pups pick up other tasks that weren’t initially in their job description. Here’s a perfect example- Jasper’s job is to identify diary, peanut and egg in foods but he also helps his girl child remember not to give into her impulses to wander/run off. His girl child gets to hold his top handle while mom holds his leash! It gently reminds the girl child to stay where she is and she gets to feel like she’s “helping” with Jasper! He immediately matches her pace rather than his mom’s the moment she grabs on!
