What did we see today on this fine Thursday ?
We had a dog come in today to have an exploratory surgery because they had been vomiting and not able to keep water or food down.
Sooo what is an exploratory surgery ? โฌ๏ธ
An exploratory surgery in a dog or a cat is a surgical procedure where a veterinarian makes an incision into the abdomen to directly examine the internal organs.
Why is this needed ? โฌ๏ธ
~ When blood work, x rays, and ultrasound are unclear or inconclusive in finding a diagnosis.
~ When a pet has ingested toys ๐งธ , clothes ๐, bones ๐ฆด, foreign material that the animal cannot pass in the intestines. The foreign body gets stuck in the intestines making it so the animal cannot safely pass it into the colon or vomit it up. This will make your pet stop eating, be lethargic, vomiting , fever, and if not treated sometimes euthanasia.
~ We can perform an exploratory surgery to check for any masses, or tumors in the intestines that could be causing the issue, or any abdominal trauma.
What we found today in our patients was what looked like to be maybe some underwear ๐ฉฒ, or a tank top. ๐
Pets will be pets, they eat things they are not supposed to we understand. ๐
Here are a few important warning signs that your pet may need a foreign body surgery or exploratory surgery.
~ ๐คฎ Vomiting
~ ๐ฉ Diarrhea
~ Bloating
~ Severe abdominal pain
~ Lethargy
~ Unexplained weight loss
~ Internal bleeding ( pale gums/ weakness) (fluid accumulation in the abdomen)
