National Pet Memorial Day 6/9/26

Do you have a memorial for your late pets? Maybe their ashes are on the mantle? Maybe you have a grave marker in the garden? On National Pet Memorial Day, we all should pause and take an extra moment to remember our 4-legged babies who have passed on. Perhaps we should add some new flowers to the garden or spruce up that memorial site. No matter how you honor your late pets, today is a day of remembrance, because we know they are waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

Heavy rain raises heartworm risk, and storm season is here.
Veterinarians are warning that the number of mosquitoes increases greatly following tropical storms and hurricanes, bringing higher risk for heartworm disease in pets, particularly in the Southeast. Veterinarians warn that the surge in mosquitoes following heavy storms can fuel another crisis: heartworm, a parasite spread by mosquito bites that can quietly kill unprotected dogs and cats. Heartworm has been a serious problem in the Southeast, where North and South Carolina rank among the top 10 states with the highest number of cases.
Hurricanes don’t just threaten homes. Vets say they leave pets facing hidden risks many owners overlook. When Tropical Storm Chantal lingered over central North Carolina this summer, rushing water swallowed streets and left parking lots flooded. In the days that followed, the floodwater became a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Veterinarians say recent data shows mosquito-friendly weather is lasting longer than it did in the past, with humidity and temperatures in the sweet spot for increased mosquito activity.
Pet owners can help protect their animals by ensuring that pets receive monthly heartworm prevention all year long. Is your pet protected? Call us today for the preventatives your pet needs.

“I am speed! I’m a precision instrument of speed and aerodynamics.” That is what lightening McQueen says in cars. Well, he is not the only one built for speed. The Greyhound is the third fastest land mammal in the world. They are a sight hound or coursing hound perfectly constructed for high-speed pursuit.
The Greyhound story begins properly in Egypt some 5,000 years ago. The hounds of the pharaohs were designed to detect, chase, capture, and dispatch the hare and other fleet-footed wildlife of Egypt's deserts. The godlike beauty of these haughty hounds was an extension of their ruler's divine majesty and the Nobles looked a bit nobler with an elegant hound by their side.
In the early 1990s greyhound racing became popular in the US, originating in West Virginia. Tracks were built in many states as the gambling industry influenced the popularity of the sport. In recent years, greyhound racing has declined in several jurisdictions, with a number of countries and regions introducing bans or phase-outs, often citing animal welfare concerns. As of 2026, there are only two active greyhound racetracks in the United States, both located in the state of West Virginia, with roughly 1,000 greyhounds still bred each year in West Virginia for racing.
Despite their racing background, they are surprisingly low-energy, well-behaved indoor loungers. They are known for their gentle, affectionate, and calm nature, making them an excellent family dog. They are good with children and generally friendly with other dogs. Many Greyhounds owned today are retired racers and adopted from rescue organizations. Greyhounds combine speed, elegance, and a gentle temperament, making them ideal companions for those who can provide care, love, and safe exercise. Their rich history, low-maintenance needs, and affectionate nature make them a rewarding breed to own.

Tails That Teach founded National Rescue Dog Day on May 20 to honor the inspiring ways rescue dogs become a part of the human family. Today highlights the benefits of giving abandoned or abused dogs a forever home and encourages compassion, patience, and empathy towards animals. There are approximately 4100 animal shelters in the United States, with over 13,000 total animal welfare organizations including rescues and sanctuaries. Nearly 2 out of 3 U.S. shelters are now no-kill, meaning they save at least 90% of healthy and treatable animals. In 2025, U.S. shelters cared for over 5.7 million animals, with approximately 4.2 million cats and dogs getting adopted into loving homes.
This day also honors the work of shelter and rescue workers who care for these animals and help raise awareness about the importance of adoption. Rescuers are dedicated individuals who devote their time and energy to saving animals in distress, whether they are lost, abandoned, abused, or in dangerous situations. Their work is emotionally demanding, requiring resilience, patience, and compassion. Rescuers focus on the welfare of animals, rehabilitating, socializing, and treating emotional and physical wounds, all while working with veterinarians and sanctuaries, educating the public, promoting responsible pet ownership, and coordinating adoptions and foster programs.
When your family is ready for a dog, or you want to add another dog to the family, consider adopting or rescuing a dog from any of the thousands of rescues and shelters in the U.S.
