Meet Farley. 🖤

Two years ago, Farley came into Second Hand Dog Rescue as a one-year-old local surrender. He was adopted - then returned when his family lost their housing. Adopted again - then returned a second time when the older resident dog in the home repeatedly went after him. That second experience changed Farley. He was never quite the same around other dogs again.

And that's where things got hard.

We are an entirely foster-based rescue... no shelter, no facility. Nearly all of our fosters have dogs of their own. So for a dog like Farley, who needed to be the only dog in the home, that meant a lot of time crated and rotated around other dogs just to keep everyone safe. It's not what we want for any dog, ever. But it's the reality for about 20 of the dogs currently in our rescue who have been with us a year or more, through no fault of their own.

📅 Farley waited over two years for what came next.

Enter Jess and her family. Through our brand-new Forever Foster Program, they welcomed Farley in as their one-and-only - and the transformation has been something else entirely. He has a dog bed in every room. The furniture is his. He has an open crate if he ever wants it, but he'll never be required to spend time in one again to keep him or other dogs safe. He goes on walks, rides in the car, hangs out with his people, has his spot on the couch, and just... lives.

Because Farley's family (he just LOVES the sound of that!), like many these days, are on a fixed income, Forever Foster was a perfect fit. SHDR continues to cover all of Farley's veterinary care, routine and emergency, as well as his crucial flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. When his family travels to visit relatives, the rescue covers boarding. If he needs a vet trip and they need help getting him there, we've got that too. 👍

Farley doesn't have to wonder anymore. He has his people. His people have him. And everyone rests easy.

So we have been helping the community and other dogs with big medical needs and now we need your help for our buddy Denny to get his misadventure of dietary Indiscretion taken care of before he ends up down for the count.

We are taking bets on what toy or blanket he had too much fun chewing up and our friends at AIC are getting him taken care of right now. We need to raise around 2-3 thousand and you guys can do it!

Thank you WHEC TV for reporting our role in her recovery

York Animal Hospital saved her life when she was in need of emergency surgery and we helped fundraise. We transported her to and from the vet and kept her under the care of a foster who worked at York. Megan is part of the reason this dog is alive

More fundraising is needed to help other community dogs like Miracle and Venom (another recent amputee who was able to return to his owners after we helped fund his medical care)

Animal Guardians worked with us to help raise funding, more is always needed as animal emergencies occur every day.

Second Hand Dog Rescue is launching something we are truly proud of ~ a program built for a very special group of dogs who have waited long enough.
We have about 24 dogs in our rescue who have been with us for a year or more. Some have been here several years. They aren't hard to love…in fact, they all are wonderfully sweet, gentle, and devoted companions. But most do best as the only dog in the home, which in a foster-based rescue where nearly every foster family already has dogs, means they spend more time waiting than any dog ever should.
The Forever Foster Program was created just for them.

Here's how it works: an approved family opens their home and their heart, and gives one of these dogs the stable, loving life they deserve. In return, Second Hand Dog Rescue continues to have their back - covering all routine and emergency veterinary care, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, help with transportation to appointments if needed, and even boarding coverage when families need to travel.

📣 DOGS JUST IN needing fosters *and* a few we'd love to take - some really interesting nice (and bigger!) dogs here 😍 All good with other dogs and love people.

✨ 10m gorgeous male Doberman Great Pyr Foxhound merle mix! Great with everyone, close to 70 lbs (return from young puppy bc he got bigger and is more active than they were expecting/hoping)
✨ 5y super unique BIG BOY Shepherd Poodle mix - neutered and we'd get him up to date on rest of vetting, coming in at 115 lbs! Does playgroups with other dogs and loves people, we can't take this guy in until we have a foster commit to help!
✨ 2y male Bernese Mountain Dog, loves people, good with other dogs, but can be resource guardy, which is totally manageable - we'll help!
✨ 1y male beautiful lab maybe Husky mix who's great with people and other dogs and just has a nice temperament.
✨ Male medium houndy mix (merle/brindle with white on nose) who's great with other dogs and enjoys people - we'll have a better idea on age estimate when he gets vetted tomorrow. We've got a very temp foster but need to find him a longer-term one (or even another shorter-term one, as he could be adopted up quickly with his personality

I’ve not posted an update on Miracle due to the ongoing investigation into her horrific shooting a couple of weeks ago.

Tragically she was shot in her leg near her home and thankfully we and the animal guardian community (Animal Guardians ) stepped up with the help of York Animal Hospital at the last hour to save her life. Somehow after not receiving the lifesaving care at REVS, no one contacted Lollypop (RPD or Revs) and her life was almost lost.

Once lollypop cruelty became aware she was taken as evidence and today is the day I’m happy to say THANK YOU to lollypop humane!

We have CHARGES FILED -ARREST IS MADE

WITHOUT ALL OF YOU HER LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST!

Lollypop has continued her care and her staples are coming out this week. She will be spayed and returned to the owner now that the perpetrator has been arrested.
