Tis the season for those darn bug bites that look so scary but are often not of concern.
Biting flies, black flies, and biting gnats are very active this time of year and can affect dogs and cats that spend time outdoors, especially in grassy areas.
**Lower-concern signs may include:**
* Flat, red bite-like marks, often target/bulls-eye in appearance
* Marks limited to sparsely haired areas, such as the belly, inner thighs, or lower legs
* No crusting, bleeding, discharge, or open sores
* Not raised or swollen
* Not spreading or increasing in number
* Your pet is acting normal
* Your pet is not overly itchy, painful, or uncomfortable
Even when these look like bug bites, it is important not to assume. Some bleeding or clotting disorders can look similar to insect bites.
**Please contact your veterinarian if:**
* The spots are spreading, worsening, or appearing in new areas
* Lesions are also present under haired skin
* Areas are raised, crusty, bleeding, open, or have discharge
* Your pet is very itchy, painful, licking, chewing, or scratching excessively
* Your pet has had any possible exposure to mouse or rat poison
* You notice weakness, lethargy, pale gums, collapse, or abnormal behavior
* Your pet is not acting like themselves in any way
* You are unsure whether the marks are bites or something more serious
**Helpful prevention tips:**
* Check your petβs skin after time outdoors
* Avoid tall grass or heavy fly activity when possible
* Do not apply human insect repellents unless your veterinarian has specifically said they are safe for your pet
