๐จ๐พ Common Household Toxins: Whatโs Dangerous for Your Pet?
Our homes are full of things that are safe for us but can be dangerous even life-threatening to our pets. Knowing the common hazards can help you prevent an accidental poisoning.
๐ Keep these common household toxins away from your pets:
๐ซ Chocolate: Especially dark chocolate and baking chocolate. The risk depends on the type and amount eaten, as well as your petโs size.
๐ Grapes & raisins: Can cause serious kidney problems in dogs. Even relatively small amounts may be dangerous.
๐ Human medications: Pain relievers, antidepressants, ADHD medications, and other medications can be toxic to pets. Never give your pet medication unless directed by your veterinarian.
๐ง
Onions, garlic & related foods: These can damage red blood cells and cause anemia, particularly when larger amounts are consumed.
๐ฌ Xylitol: This sweetener can be found in some sugar-free gum, candies, baked goods, toothpaste, and other products. It can cause dangerous low blood sugar and, in dogs, potentially liver injury.
๐ฟ Certain plants: Some common house and garden plants can cause anything from stomach upset to severe organ damage. Lilies are especially dangerous to cats.
๐งด Cleaning products & chemicals: Disinfectants, detergents, antifreeze, pesticides, and other household chemicals should always be stored securely.
๐ง Other foods & products: Alcohol, caffeine, ma*****na products, ni****ne, and some foods or supplements can also be harmful to pets.
โ ๏ธ Think your pet may have eaten something toxic? Don't wait for symptoms to appear! Some poisons can cause serious damage before your pet looks sick!
๐ Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control service right away and be prepared to provide the product name, ingredients, approximate amount consumed, and your petโs weight!
A little prevention can go a long way! Keep potentially toxic items stored securely and make sure everyone in your household knows what is off-limits to your pets. ๐ถ๐ฑโค๏ธ
