Scaly, spectacular, and seriously misunderstood! 💚 Today, we're celebrating the incredible world of reptiles and the unique animals that make them such fascinating companions!

Did you know that reptiles have been around for millions of years? These amazing animals come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, from tiny geckos to massive pythons and everything in between!

🌿 🐢 REPTILE FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW!

🦎 They have their own personalities! Many reptiles can learn routines, recognize familiar people, and display individual behaviors.

🐍 Not all snakes are dangerous! The vast majority of snake species are nonvenomous, and many make fascinating pets when cared for properly.

🐢 Their environment is EVERYTHING! Reptiles rely on their surroundings to regulate their body temperature. Proper heating, lighting, humidity, and habitat setup are essential to keeping them healthy!

☀️ Some need special UVB lighting! Certain reptiles need ultraviolet B (UVB) light to help their bodies process calcium and maintain strong, healthy bones.

🩺 They need veterinary care, too! Reptiles can hide signs of illness incredibly well, making regular wellness exams with a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine especially important!

🐾🌟 NOT YOUR EVERYDAY PATIENT! MEET THE SUGAR GLIDER! 🌟🐾
At Homeward Bound Animal Clinic, Dr. Lucca gets to care for some pretty amazing animals, and not all of them bark or meow! 🐶🐱 Today, we're showing off one of the most unique little patients to visit us: a SUGAR GLIDER! 🥹💕
🍃 So, what exactly IS a sugar glider?
Despite their big eyes and adorable faces, sugar gliders aren't rodents at all! They're small, nocturnal marsupials native to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. That means they're more closely related to kangaroos and koalas than hamsters or squirrels! 🦘
And their name? It comes from their love of sweet foods and their incredible ability to glide through the air! They have a thin membrane of skin stretching between their front and back legs that allows them to glide from tree to tree. Think of them as tiny, furry superheroes! 🦸‍♀️✨
💖 Could a sugar glider make a good pet?
They absolutely can be wonderful companions for the RIGHT person! Here's what makes them so special:
🌙 Night owls! Sugar gliders are nocturnal, meaning they're most active in the evening and overnight.
🤝 Social butterflies! These little guys are highly social and generally do best living with other compatible sugar gliders. They form strong bonds and need plenty of attention and interaction.
🧠 Smart and curious! They're intelligent, playful, and love exploring their surroundings.
🪂 Built for adventure! Their gliding membrane makes them incredible climbers and gliders, so they need a spacious, secure enclosure with plenty of opportunities to climb and explore.
🥗 Special dietary needs! Sugar gliders require a carefully balanced diet, not just fruit! Proper nutrition is essential to keep them healthy.
🏥 Exotic veterinary care matters! Like all exotic pets, sugar gliders have unique medical and nutritional needs. Finding a veterinarian experienced in their care is an important part of responsible ownership.
⚠️ A little something to remember: While their tiny size and big eyes make them irresistible, sugar gliders are not low-maintenance pets. They can live for 10–15 years in captivity, need daily care, and may not be the best fit for every household. Researching their needs before bringing one home is essential!

🐾❤️ A LITTLE EXTRA LOVE… OR A LITTLE EXTRA WEIGHT? ❤️🐾

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, and we’re talking about something that affects more of our furry family members than you might think! 🐶🐱

We all love spoiling our pets! Extra treats, table scraps, and those adorable eyes begging for just ONE more snack are hard to resist. 🥹 But sometimes, that extra love can add up to extra pounds—and even a few extra pounds can make a BIG difference in your pet’s health!

🐾 DID YOU KNOW? 🐾

⚖️ Extra weight means extra strain. Obesity can put additional stress on your pet’s joints, potentially worsening arthritis and making everyday activities more difficult.

❤️ The heart has to work harder. Excess weight can affect your pet’s overall health and ability to stay active.

🩺 It can increase health risks. Obesity is associated with conditions such as diabetes in cats, mobility problems, and reduced quality of life.

🐕 It can shorten their time with us. Maintaining a healthy body condition is an important part of helping our pets enjoy a longer, more comfortable life.

🐾 SO, HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR PET STAY HEALTHY?

🥣 Measure meals! Eyeballing portions can lead to overfeeding. Ask your veterinary team how much your pet should eat each day.

🦴 Rethink the treats! Treats should generally make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily calories. Remember, those little snacks count, too!

🎾 Make movement fun! Daily walks, interactive toys, food puzzles, and play sessions can help keep your pet moving and mentally stimulated.

👀 Watch their waistline! You should generally be able to feel your pet’s ribs without pressing hard and see a waist when looking from above. Your veterinarian can help determine whether your pet is at a healthy weight.

💗🐾 Samantha’s Story: Proof That Love and Innovation Can Change Lives! 🐾💗

Meet Samantha, a very special patient of Dr. Lucca’s at Homeward Bound Animal Clinic. ❤️

Samantha’s journey took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cancer and needed to have one of her legs amputated. While that diagnosis brought challenges, it certainly didn’t mean her story was over. In fact, Samantha’s story is a beautiful reminder of just how much is possible for our pets today! ✨

With the help of her incredible rehabilitation team, Samantha has been fitted with a custom brace and prosthetic leg to help her navigate the world in a whole new way. And can we take a moment to appreciate those beautiful butterfly details? 🦋💜

Advancements in veterinary medicine, rehabilitation, and custom prosthetics are creating opportunities for pets that once seemed unimaginable. From specialized braces to custom-fitted prosthetic limbs, these innovations can help many animals improve their mobility, adapt to physical changes, and continue enjoying the lives they deserve.

Pets are remarkably resilient. They don’t define themselves by what they’ve lost or the challenges they face. They just want to love their people, explore their world, enjoy their favorite activities, and make the most of every day. 🐶💕

Samantha reminds us that a disability doesn’t define a pet, and a cancer diagnosis doesn’t erase all the wonderful possibilities that may still lie ahead.

🦡💙 HAPPY NATIONAL BADGER DAY! 💙🦡

Today we’re celebrating one of nature’s toughest, most fascinating little mammals — the badger! And here at Homeward Bound Animal Clinic, National Badger Day has a little extra meaning because our very own Dr. Lucca also serves as the attending veterinarian at Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo! 🩺🦡

Being a veterinarian doesn’t always mean caring for the same four-legged patients every day. Dr. Lucca’s work with the animals at Zollman Zoo gives her the opportunity to care for and help protect a wide variety of species — including some pretty amazing wildlife! 🌎🐾

Badgers are powerful, intelligent members of the mustelid family and are incredibly well adapted for their lives underground. With their strong claws, stocky bodies, and unmistakable markings, they’re definitely not your average backyard visitor! 😂

And while most of us think of veterinary medicine as dogs, cats, and exotic pets, our profession can take us into zoos, wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, research, and so many other areas. That’s one of the things we love about veterinary medicine — there is always something new to learn! 🐾🔬🩺
