We have been recently been getting quite a few requests about ‘finishing out a rug’ from people that buy a hide from a store, novelty shop, or even someone they found selling it by private party. Understand that in order for a hide to be ‘finished’ into a rug or mount it includes rehydration of the hide and this can create some real problems…HERES WHY.
Some companies or shops such as novelty stores, fur or antlers specialty shops, and outdoor companies that offer hides typically are selling furs and hides that were NOT meant to continue on through the mounting process. They are tanned completely differently, typically called ‘garment’ or ‘fur dressing’ tans. True ‘Taxidermy’ tanning utilizes a different process and creates a different leather composition which is meant to be rehydrated and stretched later vs a garment or dressing tan, which is cheaper and quicker to do for companies and quickest resale. So…unless we have absolute knowledge that a hide your inquiring about has been TAXIDERMY tanned we have to decline. As rehydrating, stretching, and manipulating it over a form can end in disaster to which we will not chance liability over. IF you have interest in buying a hide to say, have a bear rug done, then you need to ENSURE it was tanned for that very purpose as there is a VERY big difference between the two types that can not, even visually, be detected easily.
Sorry for those that we have turned down projects due to this…but it’s truly a liability issue on our end.
I spoke to a woman several weeks ago who got irritated over this very thing after she bought a bear rug at a ‘Fur shop’ then called us wanting to have the hide finished into a bear rug. I did my best to explain the differences and she had the idea that all tanned hides are the same, and unfortunately that’s not always the case.
All of our hides here in the shop are taxidermy-tanned by a renowned and professional commercial tannery, and can be rehydrated and out to a form at a later date.
If you ever have questions about buying a hide and wanting it to go into a taxidermy project, feel free to reach out to us and we would be happy to help ya attempt to see if that’s a possibility, but do so BEFORE you purchase the hide if this is your desire.
Have a good evening ya’ll
