IT’S FELINE FRIDAY! 🐈

We wanted to feature our friend Cleo, who is an Orange FEMALE kitty. She wanted us to make sure we tell you why she is so special🥰

Only about 20% of orange cats are female, while about 80% are male!
To produce a female orange kitten, the mother must pass down an orange X chromosome (meaning the mother is either orange, tortoiseshell, or calico) and the father must also be orange (since he must pass down his single orange X chromosome).

Male cats have only one X chromosome (and one Y chromosome) so they just need one copy of the orange gene to grow up orange. If Mom is solid orange (meaning both of her X chromosomes carry the orange gene). All her male kittens will be orange because no matter which she passes down, it’s orange.

Cleo was enjoying all the love & scratches while Dr Schira talked to her owner😊

The second Wednesday in October is Pet Obesity Awareness Day causing many pet owners to pause and reconsider before handing over that extra treat or dinner table scraps.
That's exactly what GVC and the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) hopes this day will achieve: 𝘼 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙙𝙙 𝙬𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙨' 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙪𝙨.

An APOP clinical survey revealed that nearly 56% of dogs and 60% of cats are clinically overweight or obese.
Perhaps more alarming is that only 39% of dog owners and 45% of cat owners consider their pets overweight or obese; therefore, millions of pet owners don’t know that action needs to be taken to shed their pets' extra pounds.

𝙒𝙚'𝙫𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙣 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙩. 𝘼𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚!

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦?
Three checks, in order:
Run your hands along the rib cage with flat palms and light pressure. At a healthy score you should feel the ribs easily beneath a thin layer of fat.
Then look down from above and check for a waist behind the ribs. Then look from the side and check that the abdomen tucks upward rather than running straight or sagging.
*Scoring is done by feel, not by sight. Coat length, breed conformation, and body shape can all hide body fat, which is why the rib check comes first.*

𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 9-𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 f𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘴?
Both use a 1 to 9 scale, but the ideal band and the criteria differ. Cats are ideal at 5 only, so a cat at 4 is below ideal even though a dog at 4 is healthy.
Cats also carry fat differently, including in the abdominal fat pad, which changes what you are feeling for.
Use the species-specific chart rather than applying dog criteria to a cat.

𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺?
No. A score in the upper range records excess adiposity (𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑥𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑒) based on body condition alone. That is descriptive obesity. Clinical obesity means excess adiposity accompanied by clinically meaningful abnormalities that are plausibly attributable to that adiposity and that require medical intervention. A chart can establish the first. Only a veterinary assessment can establish the second.

There is NO judgment here, we all love spoiling our fur babies! 🥰 But we also want them to live the longest, healthiest lives possible by your side.

🐾A walk is more than exercise 🐾

It’s national walk your dog week, we want to address a topic we often have to talk to owners about:

**𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫**

When we talk about walks we often only talk about time
"He had his hour."
“10 minutes is not enough”
"We only managed 20 minutes today."
"She needs at least two hours of exercise or she’s mad."
But more isn't automatically better.

Five minutes spent sniffing, exploring a new environment, moving over different terrain, practicing a skill or simply being allowed to stop and investigate can sometimes offer more to a dog than fifty minutes of repeatedly covering the same ground.
Because walking isn't only about physical exercise.

It's movement, sensory information, mental stimulation, exploration, choice, confidence and time spent together.

And what makes a valuable walk will be different for every dog.

A young, fit working dog may have very different needs from an older dog with osteoarthritis or one recovering from surgery.

A dog who finds busy environments overwhelming may gain far more from a quiet sniff around a familiar route than a long walk somewhere stimulating.

So perhaps instead of always asking:
"How long did we walk?"
we could sometimes ask:
"What did my dog get from that walk?"
Because the goal isn't simply to clock up minutes or miles. It's to give the individual dog in front of us what they need.

What matters most to your dog when they are out walking?🐶

Today we say congratulations & goodbye to our office manager Diane and her sweet boy Arlo! 🐾💚

After almost 10 years, saying goodbye definitely doesn’t feel easy. 🥹

For nearly a decade, she has been such a big part of Goodison - not just as our Office Manager, but as a friend, a familiar face, and someone our team, patients and clients have come to know and love.

We’ve shared so many busy days, laughs, stressful moments, funny stories, and countless memories over the years. She has poured so much time, heart, and dedication into this place, and there’s no doubt that she leaves a pretty big hole around here. 💚

Thank you for 10 wonderful years of being part of our Goodison family. We’re incredibly grateful for everything you’ve done and all the memories you’ve helped create.

Congratulations on your retirement Diane, we’re going to miss you more than you know, but we’re also so excited to see what this next chapter brings for you and your family! 🥰

Once GVC family, always GVC family. 🐾💚

🌍🐾 WORLD RABIES DAY 2026 🐾🌍
Protect them. Protect yourself.

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals including our beloved dogs and cats, as well as humans.

And here’s something every pet parent should know: rabies doesn’t always look “aggressive.”

🧠 Did you know about the “Dumb Form” of rabies?

In the paralytic (dumb) form, an infected animal may not show the typical signs of aggression or excessive excitement. Instead, you may notice:

• Sudden weakness or lethargy
• Difficulty swallowing
• Excessive drooling
• A dropped jaw or inability to close the mouth
• Progressive paralysis
• Changes in behaviour
• Eventually, difficulty breathing and death

⚠️ A quiet or unusually friendly animal is NOT necessarily a safe animal.

Rabies is fatal once clinical signs appear, but it is preventable.

🐶 Keep dogs and cats regularly vaccinated against rabies. **It is required by Michigan law!**

🚫 Avoid handling stray or unfamiliar animals, especially animals behaving unusually.

🩹 If you are bitten or scratched, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and seek medical attention immediately.
🐾 Never attempt to examine or handle a suspected rabid animal yourself.

One bite can change everything. Awareness can save lives.

💚 Be aware. Prevent rabies. Protect every life.

FALL IS HERE AND THE BUGS AREN’T GOING ANYWHERE!!

Fleas & Ticks are basically the unwanted hitchhikers of the pet world. They don’t ask permission, they don’t pay for gas, and once they get comfortable, they have a habit of inviting all their friends along for the ride. Before you know it, what started as one tiny hitchhiker has turned into a full-blown family reunion!

As we head into the FALL season, be sure to keep your pet’s flea and tick prevention up to date. Even with cooler temperatures on the way, fleas and ticks can still be active and can quickly become a problem for both your pet and your home!!

Questions about which prevention is right for your pet? Give us a call, we’re happy to help! 😎
