When we share a shelter dog, it's usually because there's something special about them. Meet Rusty, fulton county animal shelter's Pet of the Week.
Rusty is currently enrolled in one of our board and train programs, and he's been winning people over everywhere he goes. With his one-ear-up, one-ear-down look, he reminds us of a cartoon character that somehow wandered into real life. In fact, if Rusty had his own animated show, he'd probably be the happy-go-lucky star who accidentally gets into trouble, makes everyone laugh, and still saves the day by the end of the episode.
What you don't see in a photo is his personality. Rusty is friendly, engaging, eager to be part of whatever is happening, and always seems to have a smile on his face. He's the kind of dog that makes people stop and say, "Who's that?"
Shelter dogs often get overlooked because people are searching for a specific breed, age, or color. Sometimes the best dog is simply the one standing in front of you wagging his tail, waiting for a chance.
If you've been thinking about adding a dog to your family, take a closer look at Rusty. We think he's got leading-character energy.
Please share and help Rusty find the forever home he deserves.
🌟 PET OF THE WEEK: RUSTY 🌟
Rusty is a mixed breed who is only a year old, and honestly? He should be spending his days chasing toys, going on adventures, and making his family laugh... not sitting around waiting for someone to give him a chance.
Life in the shelter has been really hard on him. The noise, the kennels, the constant activity… it all became too much. Rusty started shutting down, and we were genuinely worried about his quality of life.
Thankfully, he’s currently at a board and train program getting a much needed break from the shelter, and we’re finally seeing his personality start to shine again. ❤️
He’s a goofy, smart, energetic young dog who wants so badly to be a good boy. He’s eager to learn, loves his people, and has his whole life ahead of him. He just needs someone willing to give him that chance!
A few things we know about Rusty:
🐾 Just 1 year old
🐾 Great with kids
🐾 Previously lived with two other female dogs
🐾 Smart, eager to please, and loves learning
🐾 Currently thriving in board & train
🐾 May need some guidance and consistency with potty training as he adjusts to a new routine
His previous owner said he was always very interested in cats, chickens, and other small animals and liked to chase them, but never showed aggression toward them. We’re not sure if that’s prey drive, herding instincts, playfulness, or just Rusty being Rusty. Either way, if you have small animals, we’d recommend slow introductions, supervision, and helping him learn appropriate boundaries.
The best part?
🐾 His adoption fee has been WAIVED
🐾 He comes with FIVE free training sessions
🐾 He comes with ONE YEAR of heartworm prevention
🐾 We offer a 2-week "foster-to-adopt" trial period
The one thing we can’t give Rusty is a family.
He can’t stay in board and train forever, and we desperately want to find him a home before he has to come back to the shelter. He’s making progress. He’s feeling better. We don't want to see him lose that momentum.
If you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family, please consider Rusty! We truly believe there’s a great dog underneath all the stress he’s been carrying.
