The Modern K9

The Modern K9 offers doggie daycare, in-home boarding and board & trains. Every dog and every owner are unique.

Here at The Modern K9, obedience training is a way of life, not just a short-term solution to a problem. Therefore, we don’t specialize in any one technique. Reward based training may work for certain behaviors; correction and redirection may be necessary for others. Your trainer will work closely with you to understand the relationship between your dog and your stresses. We will build your confidence around understanding behaviors and communicating successfully using the most appropriate techniques available today.

2 came in like a wrecking ball!

Zoe is celebrating her 2nd birthday here with us, romping and stomping and chasing with all of her best friends. She brought many cookies to share, and is having the most amazing day of her life!

Be on the look out for Blue- Green Algae, temperatures have been ideal for this deadly bacteria, that's right it's not actually algae, and it normally likes to hang in ponds and lakes. This can be deadly to both you and your dog, so always been on the lookout.

Before swimming or allowing your dogs to swim always check out the body of water. If it looks like green paint, or pea soup was spilled in the water that is a good indication that Blue-Green is there. But when in doubt stay out, and report it to the MN Pollution Control Agency.

Below we have attached an infograph explaining what Blue-Green Algae is, ways to identify it and a few methods to test for it. There is also the link for the MN Pollution Control Agency page giving even more information and has the number to contact them should you stumble upon the bloom.

Did you know that the 4th of July is the most common holiday for pets to go missing? Here are some tips/tricks to survive the holiday weekend:

- Make sure collars are tight enough so your dog can’t slip out and all ID tags are up to date with current information. If your dog is microchipped make sure that information is up to date as well. Also have current clear photos of your dog in the event they do get out and you need to make post/flyers. In the event that your dog does get out reach out to your local Animal Control agency, local Facebook groups and The Retrievers.

-Take your pets out on leash in the event that a rogue firework happens. Even dogs with the best recalls can get spooked and may run.

- Exercise your dog earlier in the day, sniff walks are a great way to mentally and physically tire out your dogs. If you aren’t able to walk them hiding kibble inside or even in your backyard also helps get that energy out.

- I like to have music or my tv turned up loud enough to drown out most of the noise. I also have covered kennels set up in a room that is further away from the doors and windows to give them a safe place to hunker down if they so choose to.

- Have a high value chew or frozen Kong to occupy their time, you can always soak their kibble in water or bone broth and add in safe fruits/veggies/ treats. I Doggy Ice Cream is another great recipe that dogs go nuts for and the recipe is super quick and most households already have the ingredients.
-16 oz Plain Yogurt
- 1 Ripe Banana
- Peanut Butter
- you can add in safe fruits as well

How does a dog celebrate her birthday?

With a huge “paw-ty!” 🐾🎉

Today we’re celebrating Maizey’s 4th birthday! All of her friends came to help her eat all of the yummy snacks, and have a day full of fun birthday play!

Maizey is sweet and loves snuggling up to us during daycare, but most of all, loves to play with some of the smaller dogs!

Today, we have an early celebration of a special lil’ gal, Pepper!

She’s turning 3 years old tomorrow, but wanted to bring cookies for all of her friends today!

Pepper lives up to her inner essence of being a corgi/cattledog mix by commanding a room with her bark, and charging around with all of her best friends.

But what if there was a fun skill that your pup could learn to keep them happy and fulfilled on these rainy days?

Starting Monday, June 15th at 6:15pm, we’ll have a brand new session of our 4 week beginner scentwork class! These wonderful brain games will keep your pup thinking and active, utilizing their nose to locate four distinct scents.
